Subwoofer/Onyko receiver set-up directions conflict

I have a Polkaudio RM6900 audio system speaker package, with a Onkyo TX-LR552 AV receiver. Polk audio says to hookup the subwoofer with the front right/left speakers set to "Large". Onkyo says to set up the subwoofer with the subwoofer preout!!!! The tech sold me a monster cord with only one connector per end. I am only setting this up for music with one CD?DVD player...no TV or other attachments. Which way should I go? And how do you say "Large" and "Small" in the equipment language? Thanks for any help...perhaps I need a professional to come in...they cost as much as the system!

Hi Joy&Jos- welcome to the forums!
Set all your speakers to "SMALL" and hook the Subwoofer using a RCA Coaxial Cable from the Receiver "SUB OUT" or "PRE-OUT" jack to the Subwoofer's left "input".
I have my receiver's crossover set at 80hz. And although not popular- I have my subwoofer crossover set at 80hz. as well. Velodyne recommends that sometimes "staggering" the two crossovers will yield in smoother frequency response. -
Polk recommends that you use the low pass filter in the subwoofers amplifier. That is what they mean when they tell you to hook up the right & left mains with speaker wire and set those speakers to large in the receiver. You are then sending a full range high level signal to the sub's amp which the low pass filter will seperate for you.
If you choose to use the LFE out on the receiver, you will use the receiver's filter. You must make sure you set that filter to slightly above the lower frequency response of the sattelites for everything to blend properly.
Both ways will work. I would suggest you try them both to see which you prefer.
