ring-radiating tweeter

Here's some interesting info I picked up while reading the August 2001 issue of Stereophile.

The $37,500 Krell LAT-1 does not use the same ring radiating tweeter as the LSi series. It is in fact a ScanSpeak driver, not a Vifa driver. Still, DST (Danish Sound Technology) is the parent company of both ScanSpeak and Vifa and manufactures their drivers. The $11,000 Audio Physic Avanti III speaker does use a Vifa ring radiator tweeter. However, here's a quote from Stereophile:

Just because two drivers look the same on the outside doesn't mean they're identical on the inside. Vifa's ring radiating tweeter is apparently available at several different levels of performance and price. A modified version of the expensive edition is used on the Avanti III, mounted on a custom precision-turned, diamond-finished aluminum front plate.

this is whats in the a the absolute sound mag: this driver appears to be remarkably similer to the tweeter used in another manufactors $38,000 speaker system.

thats right out of the mag i got tonight.

the tweeter is a vifa xt25 ring radiator.

The point is it's not the same tweeter.

...it is possible that though it may not be the exact same tweeter -- for all intents and purposes it basically is.

For example: Pyle makes drivers for many manufacturers (Klipsch being one) -- the drivers are built to meet certain criteria set by the manufacturer.

So... a said driver in one line of speakers -- also being used by another line of speakers -- would be virtually the same with the exception of some minor differences dictated by the design criteria.

If you were to take the two tweeters apart it might be virtually impossible to tell them apart.

One thing I do know, based on the review I read yesterday -- is that the Vifa tweeter used in the LSi9 plays down to 1000Hz. This is impressive performance. There are not many, nor have there been many -- that can do this.

One of my favorite speakers was the Original Old Advent. It had a paper cone tweet that went down to 1000 Hz and sounded outstanding -- even by todays standards.

Polk has a winner here and I will certainly be picking up a set as soon as they are available. I may have use for my Bryston yet.

I'm not trying to take anything away from the LSi tweeter; it definitely sounds good. I'm just clearing up the fact that this isn't the same tweeter used in the mega-dollar speakers (e.g. Krell LAT-1). It would be interesting to hear what version of the Vifa tweeter Polk is using and if they had any modifications made to it.

i would like to know who said it was the same, all i seen is that it was like the krell speakers tweeters. but the polk tweeter has what it takes to be a winner. so what its looks like some ones eleses high price speaker. i thank polk is a great speaker builder to do this at a low price. and people should take advandage of it. and try to get a set. i know i am.
