Replacing my psw 50 that came with my RM5400 system.I'm using a HK-635 receiver. So I would like some input on the pro & cons on the Psw12 & 404. and which one would do a better job. Thanks

Hi,
Unfortunatly i dont have any experiance with the Psw 12. I recently upgraded and decided on the Psw 404 after an extensive search. It is a very fast and acurate speaker with a lot of control. -
are u dead set on polk audio subwoofers? there are a lot of other brands that you should concider like svs, hsu, velodye, etc. etc.

he isn't asking about other speakers, keep to the subject at hand

Here are my opinions, which are only half based in fact, I have a psw404, but don't have and have never heard a psw12.
I like that the psw12 has a 12" driver, the psw404 has a 10" driver.
I like the front port on on the psw12, this makes it easier to place than the rear ported psw404.
Acording to the specs, both are close on the frequency range (the low end).
According to the specs, the psw404 has twice the amp power of the psw12. Considering I have the psw404 at around 2/3 volume to keep up with my onkyo txsr702, and likewise at around 2/3 volume when I had an hk avr630. I don't know if the psw12 would have enough power for your settup.Win7 Media Center -> Onkyo TXSR702 -> Polk Rti70 -
I have an AVR635 with the PSW12 and am NOT happy with it (it's the only Polk speaker I regret spending money on). The sub worked great with my old AVR130, but since I got the AVR635, it seems I either have the volume too low on the sub and it doesn't hit for home theater, or it is just too high (there is no in between it seems) and causes major rattle from the port. Thus, I've decided against getting another polk as a replacement for this (this is where I'd mention the dreaded SVS name, but since this is polk only comparisons I won't ). For the time being, I have simply filled the port so as to reduce air movement. It still hits, but without the box rattling (if this is good or not for the speaker simply doesn't concern me as I've decided it was a bad purchase and will be upgrading within the next month or so anyway). I've even tried adding more fill to the inside in the hopes it would insulate it better and reduce vibration and rattle, but to no avail. Unfortunately, I just can't recommend this speaker....especially with this receiver.Haman/Kardon AVR635

As a Polk Community, We recomend Polk speakers. But we also recomend the "best buy" for your money.
Just so happens, Polk subs are not exactly the best buy for your money. There are other, better subwoofers out there.
SVS, HSU, Rocket, Outlaw, Adire Audio are all brands that offer a better bang for the buck.- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -
he didn't ask about other subwoofers. I know there are better subwoofers ranging from the 2000 dollar svs to the 10,000 extreme high end that people will tell you is a bargain. Maybe the guy doesn't like svs, hsu, etc.
Even though Honda is a reliable car, does he have to buy one because you own one.
Again, answer the guys ques. and if he wants to know about other, better bang for your buck subwoofer, he will imply that in his ques.
That is why these threads are soooo long because you guys stray off of the question. -
The chances are he dosnt KNOW about other subwoofers.
Thats where WE come in. To let him KNOW about them. That way he can make sure he is getting the BEST product for HIS money.
I know if I went on a forum with a budget asking about something, that they would recomend the right product I was asking about, or show me a much better one. Simple as that.
I'm sure he's on a budget, and I'm sure with that budget, he wants the best product.
As for the PSW 12 vs the PSW 404, the PSW 404 is a better sub, of course.
Your probally the first person I've met on this forum that got mad at me for recomending a better product for the money - among other things.- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -
I am not mad nor is the poster ignorant when it comes to searching for subwoofers. That is why there is a search on this forum.
Either way, I am done with commenting
Have a good day.

he didn't ask about other subwoofers
yet you didn't offer any insight on the subwoofers he DID ask about...now at least Vr3MxStyler2k3 provided some input...what have you added to the thread except post after post of whining about posting that you don't agree with? BTW, I don't think threads get long because of suggestions of other brands....I think they get long because the mere mention of SVS, HSU, Velodyne, etc. causes people to do what you did and complain without offering substance to the thread...anyway, rant over. It's only my second post, but I've lurked for a long time and seen this happen on a number of threads :rolleyes:Haman/Kardon AVR635

Screxer,
It's alright, people often tend to suggest SVS to anybody who asks about subwoofers, which doesn't hurt in my opinion, but occasionally, sometimes a person is only able to get what they suggested, and reminders to stay on track are rather useful and necessary.
dcalla1, I must say, the only PSW404 I've heard was one in CC that had a busted woofer, but I must say, it still sounded better than my first computer speaker subs,
Sorry for not be of much help at all,
Matt -
Just a revision to my first post.....I just happened to be going through the on screen display settings for the 635 today and realized that after I had done the manual EZset I forgot to turn on all the EZset settings (specifically, the speaker level one)....once I turned this one on things seemed to resolve themselves I have now taken the PSW12, fully ported to -25 (haven't gone higher) on the HK with very little rattle (the only thing I can think of is when you have all the EZset settings turned on, it adjusts the signal going out so as to avoid overpowering a speaker or something)...sorry for any confusion my first post may have caused. I am happier with my setup now....still not a perfect sub but much better than it was just a few hours ago. Would I recommend it now? Probably not with everything else available on the market but I would no longer consider it a horrible purchase. I still plan to upgrade, but the need to do it has decreased. I've never heard the other sub you mentioned so I can't compare....sorry.Haman/Kardon AVR635
