Denon 3805
Fronts: RTi70's
Center: Psb (forget the model#)
Rears: R50's
Sub: Def Tech 12"
DVD: Cheap $99.00 Samsung
I know my front and center aren't timbre matched. This should probably be addressed. Does a good DVD player make a difference in audio quality. I am very pleased with it. Just wondering what to save $ for the next upgrade. What would you recomend based on what I have listed above?
Thanks for the help!

Brett

I listen to 50-50, HT - music.

yes a dvd player can impact audio quality...

does your dvd player have SACD or DVD-A capabilities. If you upgrade your dvd player now you're gonna need to buy a new "hd or blu ray" player later. So depends on how much "MORE" you want out of your current dvds.

as far as upgrading anythign else. No idea maybe center if you weren't pleased, but I would upgrade the entire front stage and move stuff to the back if you really wanted more. I think that dennon is fine especially since new formats are coming out for the new disk so that might be something to wait for as well.

    I'm not very experienced :D

The DVD player will only affect audio quality IF you are using the analog outputs. If you are using optical Toslink or Digital Coax, the player is just acting as a transport and most of the audio signature is coming from the DACs in your Denon, which are pretty good by the way. Upgrading your DVD probably won't give you any noticable audio improvment until you get up to the SACD/DVD-A players in the $500-$1000 range.

Speakers might be a better upgrade for you.

For your center, a CSi30 or CSi40 would blend better with your towers. For your surrounds, either Rti38/28 or FXi50/30 would do a good job.
For rig details, see my profile. Nothing here anymore...

Get some new fronts (i.e., RTi10's) and put the 70's in the rear. Then invest in a better sub. Then worry about the DVD player. Since you don't know the model number, I can't comment on the center channel.
HT/2-channel Rig: Sony 50” LCD TV; Toshiba HD-A2 DVD player; Emotiva LMC-1 pre/pro; Rogue Audio M-120 monoblocks (modded); Placette RVC; Emotiva LPA-1 amp; Bada HD-22 tube CDP (modded); VMPS Tower II SE (fronts); DIY Clearwave Dynamic 4CC (center); Wharfedale Opus Tri-Surrounds (rear); and VMPS 215 sub

    BrettS,

Hate to be smartass sounding but I am Reeltrouble. OK, what do you think your total budget is going to be?

Your Denon is a pretty good piece, I would keep it look to eventually get rid of everything else, buy a high current 2 ch. amp, something back catalogue, check Russmans posts for amps to see what I mean to use for your fronts for 2 channel music.

Someday you will want a new dvd, for now, well I bet it does a decent job on HT. Universal players are great but the Denon 3910 or equivilant is what you will be looking for and it costs. If that is not in the budget then get a seperate source cd player maybe a used one off of Audiogon, you gotta research yourself, but maybe a NAD or Cambridge audio etc. they wont be your last but will be a good forward step for you.

We could write a book on this stuff, agree on some, disagree on lots, but you need a good source, good pre (you have this with the Denon) good amplifier and good front main speakers to start with.

Take your time looking, that Denon can get you through for awhile for amplification needs.

    Have fun.
