Found a Carver SD/A 360 cd player at the local GW store today. Folks were just walking right past it. Price $16.01. Brought it home, wiped it off, hooked it up and loaded 5 cds, hit the play button and wow. Great sounding player. Works like a charm.

Yeah, the people in the town I live in think that a KLH "HT in a box" is high end. Well maybe that's an exaggeration, but you get my drift. I never see anything even remotely close to a quality piece of gear at the local GW.

    Nice find!:)

I just figured out what 'GW' stands for! :p

I picked up my Scott 208D bookshelves at a Salvation Army type store in town for $20. I've really enjoyed listening to them, especially before I got my Klipsch RF-35s. However, the surrounds have cracked and fallen apart pretty badly, and the last time I took of the grill covers for dusting, I noticed the paper cone on one of the tweeters is ripped pretty bad. :(

But I guess that's not too bad, since I haven't actually listened to them in a long time.

Yeah, the GW's around here are crap, (you can occasionally find some good vinyl, but you have to dig through a lot of barbra striesand to find it), but the PTA thrift store is a goldmine. I think Goodwill ships stuff around and the employees get first pick, but the PTA store is local & seems to have more donations than buyers...

The store I get my good stuff from is in an area that has a large number of higher income residents for the area. It also helps to find out when the store moves the items to the floor, as many have certain days they price it and place it. Stay on good terms with the clerks because they can help you out.

I've found a lot of NM vinyl around my area. Nothing like finding a group of lp's for a buck each and all look unplayed...

Sounds like you know the routine. Let somebody else take the retail hit.

Some of the stuff is older but still cool. The other day I walked out of my local antique store with 40 new lp's. They were opened but I'm sure they couldn't have been played more than once if at all. After paying my $42 at the checkout I got to thinking how many CD's, SACD's or movies I could have purchased for the same amount. Lets see, maybe 2 movies or 4 CD's or 1 SACD...

I got my Monitor 5jr's at a thrift store for $15. Had to replace the tweeters, though.
