Purchased at my local thrift yesterday. Altec Lansing "Design 5"
I'm thinking from the cruddy veneer and grille cloth they were pretty cheap, probably circa the late 70's. They sound...okay...a little harsh and reedy in the highs New garage speaks for me I guess. Worth every penny of the $6 for the pair that I paid.

ah, I bet that "9 78" on the back is a production date. Showed up better in the photo than just in looking at them.

That was a steal. Nice find. They'd probably fetch some decent $$ on Ebay, just because of the Altec rep.

I have a pair of the 10 model that need new surrounds, I'll get to it somewhere down the road. Neat find.

Not from Altec's better days, that's for sure. Good grunt speakers for the garage though. Actually pretty similar to an Advent 'dual tweeter' design from around the same timeframe.

    Cheers,

That crushed/deformed tweeter could be where some of your harshness is coming from. But in general, paper cone tweeters are harsh
    Ludicrous gibs!

Actually, I think paper cone tweeters have a pretty smooth response. Hard to F up a paper cone (design wise). It still could be tweeter related though - I'd say there is a greater chance than zero what caps are in the high pass are dried out and WAY out of original spec.

    Cheers,
    Russ

Yeah I suspect the caps are probably pretty well toasted. Surprisingly the f'ed up tweeters don't seem to sound any better or worse than the okay-looking ones in the other speaker. And although I was kind of excited when I saw them...I wasn't that excited ND13.

I'm sure the Wharfedale's will look much better than these old dogs. But hey, they are perfect for the garage beater system.
