Hi everyone,

It has been awhile since I last posted on the forum and even though I have been lurking around I haven't really felt the need to post about anything. However the other day I was driveing home and decided to stop by a audio store I saw called audio forest. Inside I met a man called Ellis Baxter. He was very knowlegable and helpful and I talked to him for nearly five hours about many audio realted things and within the first hour he cleared up many things that I had only had an imperfect understanding of. My question is this has anyone ever heard of this man before or perhaps baxter-wright labs . My reason is this even though I believe much of what he told me was true some of it sounds somewhat fake. Please help me find out if my mistrust is valid or not. By the way he says that he has been in audio design and sales for nearly 40 years so I figure some one must have heard of him.

thanks for that link but it really doesn't provide me the info I was looking for. this guy says he does alot of work for some of the major audio compaines mostly reworking crossovers but when i searched for his name about all i could find was that picture which he had honestly already described the story behind. If he is so knowledgeable and does all this stuff why can't i find out more?

Has any one ever heard about how the space required to form certain tones. like the low frequency tones a subwoofer would produce ellis had explained that low frequency tones actually take a certain amount of space to form?

I just did a google on him, and from what I read, you can probably trust just about anything he told you.

If you trust this guy like i my self honestly feel like i can then from what he explained and honestly we didn't talk about it enough for me to fully understand but alot of these low frequency tones that everyone is raving about below around 25hz i believe you are not actually hearing i believe he said that it takes 40 ft for a 25hz tone to fully complete it's sine wave. I don't really understand but perhaps someone here could clarify.

Like you just said, your discussions with him didn't get in depth enough or last long enough for that to be fully explained. I think I read that he's a doctor in an audio related field of some sort.

"Ellis is an extraordinary individual with experience on all three sides of the music industry. Not only has he done major work on the studio and playback sides of the industry, but back in the 70's he was renown for modifying the instruments of major rock musicians in the Southeastern states."

Sounds to me like he knows a thing or two about audio, certainly more than I do.

Agreed. And Derek, let us know if/when you get the answer on that question. Sounds like a topic of interest to any DIYer trying to build a sub. I wish that I could say I had gotten to talk to him for 5 hours about audio.:)

The full length of the wave does not mean that it doesn't have an effect in your room at shorter distances. You may not hear below 20Hz, but you can feel the effects in your room, such as pressurization, objects resonating, etc.

To quote myself from an old thread that kind of goes along with the point here:

"My basement interior walls were made with about the cheapest wood paneling crap you can get. The deeper the bass, the further back from the subs the walls will resonate. Its pretty sad really. I hope to refinish it properly some day."

thanks for the replies everyone. i will certainly try to speak with him again as the store is only 15-20 min. from my apartment. He had alot of great information that he shared with me that really made me think. by the way he also refurbishes speakers. I was talking to him about redoing the crossovers on my sda-1s and this is something that he does quite a bit so i will try to get a quote on the price next time i see him.
