My 4 head VCR died, I am using an old 2 head non stereo. I can only get sound out of the center if on PLII or mains if in stereo. Is there any way I can get it surround out of it. I am using a Y connector at the receiver end.

Well obviously you're not going to get surround effects on the various channels, but you know that...

Does your receiver have a 5 channel stereo mode or something like that...that may work...

even wit a y splitter, its the same signal, therefore plII reads it as a mono signal, hence center channel only. not a thing you can do about it with a mono VCR.

get thee a DVD player and be done with it :D

I can't remember the last time I used a VCR. We've got three in the house and they are all collecting dust, except for one that my wife uses to play her "ABS of Steel" video.

As for the mono VCR, check your artificial surround settings. I think there is one designed for old mono movies. It will add a little life to things at least.

:D:p:):p;):D I am not laughing at you.....I still have one, just doesn't get any use anymore. I just keep it on my rack to create the illusion that I have a lot more stuff.....just buy a new one, you can get one on the dirt cheap. If you buy some VCR tapes they may even throw in a free VCR at your A/V store.....check out amazon.com.....I just browsed throught them and see many out there for under 50 bucks..."Hi-Fi Even" in my best snaggle puss rendering..

I know I should just buy one, we only use it to tape shows when we are not home, We can't justify at this point buying or renting a PVR.

edit: and for all of you who feel bad and have lots of them lying around, think of it as spring/summer cleaning! I would gladly accept donations ;)

Wish we could go back in time. We had two, had my wife bring the Panasonic S-VHS (whooo hooo), to work and place a free sign on it in her lunch room...and it still took three days for someone to take it. I'll tell you what, PM me your address, I bet I still have at least two lying around my house....if I find another I'll give you one. When you receive it just send me whatever the shipping charge is on the label. But I warn you, what you get may be a top loading VCR with an analog counter...J/K.....like I said PM me, and I'll tell you what I can dig up in the attic...

I have one that is unused and up in the attic, but it is also of the mono variety as well. The other two stereo are still in semi-use. Sorry.

I'm sure he has a DVD player, but DVD players don't record. Read his posts.

I have 2 of those but as mentioned above non of the 2 dvd players record. PVR is to expensive at this point as so with DVD recorders. It leaves me with VHS good ole reliable and cheap $$ VHS

Before we get on his case too much, lets check something first.

Hey, if you are like me and have a ton of good, old movies on VHS. Why plunk down hundreds of dollars to replace them on DVD?

Then you have guys like Micah who have Peter North's entire catalog on VHS, much of which isn't available on DVD.....

Call me cheap !! buying a VCR is not a priority so if I can get one on the cheap good for me, I would much rather have a decent used VCR than a what was that S!%t on the link 99$ dvd recorder and save 50-75$. Then I would have to spend more money on blank DVDs when I already have a couple blank VHS.

Go ahead call me cheap. I would take is as a compliment.

A TV tuner would run you about $20-30 if you're interested in going that route.

    Hey Willow,

If you grease the wheel wher your polar bear runs you can get something like an extra 50 - 60% more power from him. You will have to replace him every four years instead of every five but it is worth it for the extra power. Plus the extra money you get back from PBEC for generating extra power to sell to the US (assuming you don't increase your consumption) will probably pay for your next PB anyways.

P.S. My mother In-law was raised in Churchill so I can get you a good price on a "slightly used" bear from their polar bear jail if your OK with refurbished.

I guess if you factor the vintage **** factor, VCR's are kinda important eh? :p

Willow, are you in Toronto, I know Eletronics Liquidators have 4 Head Hi-Fi VCRs for like $19.99, they regularly advertise a full page on the "Sun" on Fridays and they have several locations across the GTA. Just FYI. :)
