I was bidding on an amp on flea bay. It's this Sunfire. I wanted it to bi amp some speakers I just got.

So I miss out on it. This is Sunday.
This morning I got an email:

Dear amulford,

*** REPLY ONLY AT: michaelwien07@yahoo.com *** You expressed interest in my item "Sunfire Cinema Grand Signature Amplifier"(5782296707) by bidding, however the auction has ended with another member as the high bidder, but he didn`t had the money to pay for it.The deal will go strictly according to eBay's rules and policy. Tell me if you are still interested in buying this item.I am a serious eBay member and i hope that you are too. Please reply to this email address: michaelwien07@yahoo.com ***THANK YOU ***

I decide to bite, WTH, maybe I can still get it. So I reply:

Yes, I am. What do you propose?

To which I get this:

Hello,

I know this is **** now, so I ask him why his user id is different. I gets no reply...

I sent the original seller an email asking for confirmation. No reply as yet from him.

Around 2 PM I get this one:

Dear amulford,

I am the seller of the Sunfire Cinema Grand Signature Amplifier Item number: 5782296707 ,and I've just been contacted by the eBay staff who informed me that the winner of the item I sold, and due to security reasons the eBay policy automatically proclaims you to be the winner by default. I need your agreement on this so I can contact eBay to confirm you that you're the winner, otherwise I'll relist the item. I am sorry for the inconvenience, but I need an answer asap. Your last given bid is taken into consideration. Please email me to this address NewOutlook1960@aol.com to have it sealed asap. Looking forward to hearing from you.

So I ask this one the same - "What do you propose?" - To which I get this reply:

Dear amulford,

I am sincerely sorry for my delayed reply, for the time being I am in the U.K. at my daughter's, so I cannot check my e-mail as often as I usually do. I was waiting for your email and now, if you confirm this email with the terms of shipping/payment, I shall contact eBay and we will start the transaction. Ok, the item is still available (i. e. Sunfire Cinema Grand Signature Amplifier Item number: 5782296707) for US $1,500.00.

The terms are as follows:

SHIPPING:

Shipping and handling costs - Included. Shipping will be made via UPS Ground and my assistant, Mr. Dan Rivers, will be in charge with this task due the fact that I'm in the UK. Tracking number will be e-mailed to you the same day after the payment is confirmed.

PAYMENT:

Ebay will be also made aware of this transaction, as I want everything officially set up. Since security and safety is an issue for both parties, eBay will e-mail you the confirmation that our transaction will be performed under eBay's Protection Plan. They will contact you with shipping and payment details.

Please provide your full name and the ship to address. Awaiting for your reply.

Sincerely,
Daniel Riggs

I turned it over. I wonder how well they can make it look like an official Ebay transaction. Some sucker is gonna get boned, Iwonder if there is a law for this...

So you turned it over to EBay? Did Ebay confirm it as a scam?

The seller on the listings name is wbarry, that's not even close to those other names that were emailed to you. It stinks to high heaven, good catch. Could have been a costly mistake, huh?

Second chance offers are legit, but come in a different format done through ebay's second chance system not random emails.

BTW, I couldn't hang around long enough to see this $1.5k transaction through since I had to go on holiday in the UK. Nice business sense!

The problem that I see is that ebay is very little help in situations like this. They simply provide the venue, but not the protections.

Happened to me when I lost the bid to the SRS that had the pic with the big girl in them. I got the same note with the second chance offer. I contacted the seller via ebay, and he said that it wasn't him that emailed me. And guess what, they were in the UK on vacation........so I emailed them and said, I'll tell you what, send them to me, and I'll look them over and give you what I think they are worth. I never got a reply back....

I've gotten legit 2nd chance offers. They are official Ebay mails and they have a "buy it now" button link. No need to give all that damn info. Just a yes or no and if you want it, use the buy it now for the price you bid originally. You can reply to the seller with a counteroffer if you want, but there is still official Ebay links to do that.
For rig details, see my profile. Nothing here anymore...

I'm starting to get lots of scam e-mails from stuff I sell on audiogon. The scammer is usually not an audiogon member and sends standard emails (no names and they don't refer to the specific item). And they always want to use BidPay.

BidPay is horrible and I never accept it. Lots of scams are run through BidPay. Their customer service is virtualy non-existent. I prefer PayPal. PayPal has its issues, but at least I get paid up front before I send the item.

I only deal with U.S. customers. Sometimes Canadian, but kinda reluctant to do so.

For large ticket items, I will talk to the seller on the telephone before I purchase. When I sell amps, speakers, etc., I provide my telephone number to someone who expresses sincere interest in purchasing the item.

If the seller doesn't have a lot of history and I really want to buy something from him, I propose that he ship it COD. Works pretty well.

I don't purchase anything with a money order unless I talk to the seller on the telephone and get a good comfort level for his honesty.

On ebay I am wary of any seller that has a feedback score of less than 99%.

got one scammer working on me right now, here is the email:

    Hello,

How are you doing today? I got the payment details and I got in touch with one of my clients who happen to be owing me an amount and asked him to ensure that the payment went out to you as soon as possible. However, I have just been notified by my client that the entire amount which he owes me was sent to you.

I instructed him to make out a payment for the sum $250.00 USD to you and not the whole amount he owes me. He owes me the sum of $2,800.00 . USD.

I was notified that he made out the payment for the sum of $2,800.00 . USD in your name instead of the amount that is supposed to be for the payment as agreed.

I will need you to be honest and sincere. I need you to assure me that immediately you receive the payment, you will cash it, withdraw your own payment and the excess, I will provide you all the information required in refunding the excess, peferreably via western Union Money Transfer.

Not to worry, I am sure we can handle this. All I need is an assurance that you can be trusted and that you can handle the situation. I do my business based on trust, it has always been very good with me, I hope that you will help me keep that record. I really will appreciate utmost sincerity from you.

Immediately the payment is received, you are to notify me so I will provide you with the instructions needed in refunding the excess and any information / direction required in doing the shipment. The payment is supposed to get to you soon. Upon confirmation of receipt of the funds, I will provide you all necessary instructions and information.

    Please do advice.

    I await your reply.

    Thanks with regards.

    Mark Perry.

I remember years back there was a guy that dedicated an entire website to them scams. He had many that he would keep replying to.. Telling them he would help them by sending them money, it even got to the point that he said he would meet them in some hotel in some country and never showed up, but the other party did. Anyway he continues this email with the scammer and continues until they give up. He continues to provide them hope that he is coming through for them but then something tragic happens, pretty funny reading. If anyone can remember anything like this and can provide a link would be appreciated. I tried to google it but couldn't find it..

The powerbook is an awesome (but lengthy) read. If I remember correctly, that scammer was located in England as well.

    Perhaps you're thinking of http://www.scamorama.com/ ?
It's a popular 419 site but there appears to be many of them.

The powerbook was probably one of the best ones I've read recently. heh...
