what is the correct way to split a 14/4 wire on speakers? Does the color matter?

It does not matter as long as you connect the same wires together. (the colors you connect to red terminals on the speaker should be the same color wires you connect to red terminal on the amp (or AVR). same goes for the black.
Bad things will happen if you do not double check that this is the same.

Welcome Canuck !
bi wiring is running 1 set of cables to the top part of you binding posts (providing you have 2 sets) and another to the bottom ones. I have said it this way to keep it simple. Does it make a diff. I tried it, all I found is that I spent more money on extra cables I didn't need ! -
aahh ok thanks....i will save the wire....and stick with one set.

of course feel free to try, don't just take my word, you may find an improvement worth 2x the wire cost.;)
