What a GREAT evening......
Last night was the Spoleto Festival finale (Charleston art/music festival) that they hold annually on the lawns at Middelton Plantation (featured in the movie the Patriot). The symphony plays outdoors to a HUGE tailgate party. The lovely Wendi and I and some friends steamed about 10lbs of shrimp, fruit/veggie trays, wine/cheese and a buttload of icy cold beer. What a great time. Oh, and a neato cool fireworks show at the end.
The symphony was FANTASTIC. They played a Prokofiev suite that I actually have on vinyl (how cool is that?) and suite from Hamlet. The conductor was Alfred Newman (has scored 90 or so movies according to the program; War of the Roses, Ice Age etc etc).
It was a fantastic, fantastic time. What was really cool is that my friends who aren't so much into classical were blown away by the music. I've been listening to classical almost exclusively lately and it's just amazing how much good stuff there is out there. Then you turn on the radio and realize how much BAD stuff is being produce today.
Pics to follow.

Wow, that sounds really cool!

Sounds like a great night.
It stormed in KC so I was inside. Cool part for me though was that PBS did an hour long show of the Mama's and the Papa's. Since it was a digital broadcast my receiver dd went active and I hurried up and switched over to PCM for the 2 channel.
I would like to get them on SACD or dvd-a.

Troy,
Sandy and I have always wanted to attend, but never seem to find ourselves in Charleston (one of our all-time favorite places) at the right time. The event posters I've seen throughout the years are works of art in and of themselves. I assume this is the 2005 version?

You would be correct, Mike.
You know, I'm giving some thought to organizing something around the Spoleto finale next year. Raise tailgating to a new level.
Anyhow, Mike, next year, put it on your calendar, there are some really great events to do with Spoleto.

Troy,
Will do.
My former employer is attempting to entice me out of my early retirement. One of the side bar benefits of that would be my need to again visit Charleston on a regular basis. The regional facility there will most certainly require my personal attention in late May/early June.
