the ASL integrated has been down since last Friday and just received the replacement quad of KT88's for it. I can't believe how much I missed the "tube" sound over the last few days...
Funny but descriptive terms like dimensional, fullness, seperation, etc. only vaguely describe the sound to me. The full impact is in the "organic" quotient for a given voice or instrument's sound. I swear on the last track of Natalie Merchant's "Tigerlily" you can hear the individual fibers of the bow on the violin as it glides over the strings or Jorma Kaukonen's fingers moving to grab notes along the neck of his guitar on "Blue Country Heart"
On to more listening.........

Me like um too!
My sister is visiting for the first time since I went on the gear building spree. She was mesmerized by the sound of the Shanling-Transcendent rig while we spun some vintage Bonnie Raitt, and pointed out to me "I count 24 tubes glowing!" I told her "well, actually there are 3 more in the preamp you can't see." -
Which KT88 did you get? What was brand was the previous set?
You're right about the sound of tubes. Everything sounds so natural and real. You can really feel the presence of the performer/s.
Mike,
Damn dude, 27 tubes? You have a nice fire place there for the winter.

Sovtek kt88's on this set but i'm already ordering some EH's though. The Sovtek tube is good but i miss the meat of the sound being centered in the midrange. The Sovtek definitely brings out the mids and highs but seems centered between the two with less emphasis on the low end (not that it's not there).
I'll probably do some experimenting with both sets and rolling some tubes in the Jolida CDP. -
BTW, BMDP, Troy and I listened to some of that Josh Sklair Cd on my nOrh SE-9 monday and man that disc is amazing.
Heck, we pumped 9WPC through the Polk mon 7's and pure silk is all I can say.
Excellent, excellent disc. -
Dave,
Glad you and Troy are enjoying the album. He's an accomplished player and David Manley's production is magical.

I love that album. One of my reference recordings when trying out new gear. -
Love tubes eh? Wait until next week, you'll be loving Troy's tubes. He's getting what may very be 'the' tube amp in some circles.
Troy, don't let Dave sell any of his KT88's, you'll be able to roll them if you want to.
Cheers,

Yep, he's gonna get in touch as soon as its in and he has some free time, looking forward to hearing it. I told Troy I thought that the KT88's were used in that CJ amp and if he wanted to try 'em out it won't be a problem. -
6550's get a bad wrap for some reason, why, I have NO idea. They were built FOR AUDIO. Not discounting anything KT related, not in the least - but I look forward to Troy being the 'anti KT88' on the board, and running big bottle 6550's.
Cheers,

I've seen reviews/opinions bad and good about 6550's but will still try some out soon enough.
I'm new enough with the tube scene to not snub my nose at a particular brand or style of tube 'til i've at least experienced it first hand if possible. That's part of the learning curve and with some research and info/experience from some forum members here and on other boards I only hope to weed out real dogs or dead ends. -
Hey Russ,
Which power tube do you like best? I see that you've gone through amps using 6550, KT88, EL34 and that weird EL84 with a signal tube inside (forgot the type).
