What is a good CD palyer

I just bought a Rotel RSP1066. I power it with the RB 1070, into Rti 8's. At this point I am primarily a 2-channel person. I bought the 1066 to improve my sound and for future expansion into surround. I would like to get a pretty good CD player. I am currently using a Yamaha natural sound CDC 585. The sound is still a little muttled. My wife wants the ability to play multiple discs at a time when she has friends over. Given the amount of money I have spent lately, it looks like a carousel for me.
I am looking for a player that has a clear sound and works well with Rotel. The 1066 (IMO) seems to be lacking some sound stage and depth in the "2 Channel" mode. Im not sure if you can make some of that up with a good source. I'm in the used price range of $500.00 or less.
I also wanted to say thanks to the people who have given me their opinions in the past.
Thanks Patrick

I owned that exact same Yamaha CDC 585, and your right - its one of the worst sounding CDps I've ever heard....
The Denon DCM 280 is a MUCH better CD player in all aspects. However, the Denon skips more...unlike the Yamaha which could take the 2 mile drop and still be playing...
But yeah, it wouldnt take much to beat it...
Sorry for being "up-front".- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -
Welcome to the Club PRC.
You have a great processor in Rotel. You will compliment it perfectly with the Rotel RCD-1072. Yes, it is more than what you want to spend, but it will be well worth the price. I just replaced my 15 yr old RCD-855 with the 1072. I love it!
OOPs just saw you wanted a changer, then I would get the RCC 1055.
What speakers & amp are you running with the 1066? That might be where you are getting some of the muddleness from.
Rotels are reknowned for their clarity when it comes to music. It's what they built their reputation on.Marantz AV-7705 PrePro, Classé 5 channel 200wpc Amp, Oppo 103 BluRay, Rotel RCD-1072 CDP, Sony XBR-49X800E TV, Polk S60 Main Speakers, Polk ES30 Center Channel, Polk S15 Surround Speakers SVS SB12-NSD x2 -
PRC,
As Frizz has suggested a Rotel CDP, would be a good choice.
I have an inexpensive shuffle player which gets used for entertaining as background music, it also conveniently stores my CD collection at the rack.
When I want 2 channel, "critical listening" on the living room rig, I use a higher end single disc player, the difference between the players is very noticeable, this combination has worked well for me. I have found that shuffle players are a compromise. For well less than 500.00 you could pick up player off of Audiogon. Maybe the Rotel, NAD, Cambridge for starters to look at.
Enjoy your search and welcome to CP.

cfrizz,
I use a 1070 amp and polk RTi 8's. The polks seem brite to begin with. I use a basic power conditioner and still am using the factory power cords. My speakers are bi-wired with 12-2 and 14-2 wire. I use a entry level polk sub. I'm hoping to upgrade that in the future also. I use an optical input for the cd.
Thanks for the imput

Try some high quality RCA type interconnects instead of that nasty optical cable and try running a jumper made of the same cable as your present speaker cable between the posts with the bi-wires still hooked up. Both will help tame your brightness.Political Correctness'.........defined

I second the Denon. It's a great player for the money with a solid build. I would recommend the DCM 380 though, has a bit better processing and a bit better build, but also is a 5 disc carousel. It won't break the bank either. I think it's around $300, maybe $350. Sounds great. We use it with some Martin Logan Aeon i's at work all day and it works well. If you want to play SACD or DVD-A ever, though, the DCM's will not offer that.Current System:

I would NOT reccomend the Denon DCM-380. I sent mine back. It would skip if I opened to doors to my audio rack, or if the CD had even the slightest damage. The changer mechanism is slow and clunky. Sound quality was good though.
I bought it to replace a 15 year old Denon which never had any of these problems. The build quality of the older player was much better than the new one.
I ended up getting the Yamaha CDC-685, which has the S-bit+, instead of the S-bit in the 585, and a few more features. In my opinion, it sounds as good as the Denon, build quality is much higher, and it's $100 cheaper too. -

Oh, I should have read the whole question. Perhaps I projected my past quest for a multi disc cd player which resulted in a single disc changer (nad c541i)..The greatest enemy of truth is very often not the lie - deliberate, contrived and dishonest - but the myth - persistent, persuasive and unrealistic.

I'm very happy with my Sony C2000ES CD/SACD 5-disc player. It has basic bass management for SACDs and is mechanically reliable, although a little slow when first reading a disc to see if it's SACD or CD (I think all such players are). For CDs, I tend to use the DACs in my Denon 3803. For SACDs, the player's analog outs sound VERY good.Multichannel Music:

i have a denon dcm 380 that i bought from tweeter two years ago and the first unit they sold me was a dud. i took it back and they gave me a new one and i have not had a problem with it since i got it and it has hdcd decoding and the filter in the hdcd chip also improves the sound of normal cd,s and i think it sounds very good for the money. until i bought a high end single disc redbook player i used it constantly and i would recommend it to anyone with limited funds but if you buy one make sure you get it from someone who will take care of you if there is a problem. rotel makes a very good five disc player in the $700.00 range and it also does hdcd decoding. i paid about $300.00 for the dcm 380 but if you can afford it i would spring for the rotel if you insist on having a changer.Rogue Audio stereo 100 tube amplifier - Lector Zoe preamplifier with 6H30 pi's

Strongly recommend this unit for about $400. The amount of space you will save by storing 400 cds in one box is incredible.
Women love it. 400 cds on shuffle and 8 groups to shuffle.

Slap some fancy wire interconnects to that spinner, that'll fix anything!

Peter,
I mean no disrespect, but everybody knows Sony (ES) or any other company doesn't put much effort into making those "jukeboxes" sound that good. After all, there is a hierarchy to cdp's.
To answer your question, they lack musicality and tone as most cdp's in that price range do.Political Correctness'.........defined

Nobody really uses a jukebox for critical listening, the companies know it, there"jukeboxes" for parties and such, like I said earlier mine is a convenient storage system where I can quickly locate a disc. Other than that when company is over it gets used for background music, still useful, but PRC said he is into 2 channel and should really look at some of the single disc players that have been recommended.
