Speaker Calibration with DVD
I know there are several threads that discuss speaker calibration, but I am having what seems a very basic question.
I can calibrate speakers with the test tones of my Denon 3803, but I've read that calibrating from the source (DVD) will consider all components thus provide a better calibration.
Here is my question; how am I supposed to calibrate with the DVD tones? Is the only way to check the meter with the DVD tone, go back to the receiver settings and adjust , then go back to the DVD tones and check....until you get the desired measure?
thanks!!

Hey guys...any thoughts at all? One thing I did not mention...I have my DVD connected directly to TV via DVI, so when playing DVD the receiver's set up screens are not visible.
Thanks._________________________________________________

you do not need the on screen display to adjust your speaker levels on your amp. The lcd on the amp should display one line at a time on the setting that you are adjusting.
So just go into the on screen display get to the speaker level part and then you can switch inputs on the tv so as to view the dvd calibration disc you are using. From there you can play the tones and use you amp remote to adjust the levels by looking on your receivers lcd.
I think that is what you were asking -
Thanks Brent; my receiver does not work like this...or I am doing something wrong...(Denon 3803)
To be able to see the on-screen display I need to set the receiver to anything but the DVD, and when I switch input to DVD, the settings dissapear from the LCD.
I even tried to do it with the receiver on DVD; by heart I pressed the right buttons to get to speaker level... they came up in the receiver screen....but then what I get is the receiver test tones.
Isn't there a way to adjust levels without the receiver test tones? Or should I go with what my logic says (measure with DVD, go back and adjust up or down with tones, go back and measure with DVD, and repeat this until DVD measures are where expected)
Anyone else has done this with this receiver?
Thanks._________________________________________________

well actually yeah it could very easily be done in a three step process.
1. let the receiver do it's auto adjust thing with it's tone (this will put it fairly close)
2. go to dvd use your test disc and an spl meter. For each channel read what it says on the spl and that will tell you how many db's off it is from what you are leveling them to.
3. just go back to receiver and change the levels on the speaker with the on screeen display by the certain decibal numbers that you just arived at by measuring the dvd with your spl meter.
i think that made sense. very simple process.... confusing to type -
Will follow this...though there is no auto adjust option...I think that's the 3805.

I have the Onkyo tx-sr800 and it doesnt set auto either so i use internal pink noise. I have tried the avia test disc also and there seems to be a difference but i have heard to use the internal amplifier pink noise. It seems that if you watch a lot of dvd's, which i do, you would use the dvd to calibrate and thats what i am going to do when i get my final speaker placement together.HT:
Onkyo TX-SR800 amp.

HTrookie,I know your methods are a PITA...But that's the same sequence I've had to go through to calibrate with AVIA...
You would think there would be an easier way,but I've yet to find it...The 3803 manual is very vague in alot of areas...
