Hey guys Im doing a 5.1 setup with RTi8 or 10 for my fronts. I really cant put speakers behind me so they will need to be on the side so I have decided to go with a front firing speaker. Which would you guys recommend for the rears> the 4's or the 6's?

have you tried auditioning them yourself?

Imo i don't see the need for a huge surround speaker unless you have a great deal of amplification and a huge room to boot. The rti-4 should do fine. I have a 20x15 room and this is what i use:

    Front- rti4
    Center- csi3
    Sides- Fx300i dipole
    Rears- Fx300i Bipole

    Pre/Pro- H/K 235
    Adcom 5300 2ch. amp
    Adcom 7300 5ch. amp

btw- welcome to the forum. =)

Have you looked at the FXi line. I have the FXi5's and love them. They are mounted on each side of my listening position.

I have the RTi6's in 7.1 HT. They sound very good. A lot clearer than the RTi38's which are on the side.

Get the largest speakers you can afford that will work for your setup-- in your case it's the RTi6. At one time I had RTi28's then switched to RTi38's and there was a big difference. The Fxi5's will work well, too.

    zachwhite- let's start over- lol.

    how big is your room?
what are you driving your speakers with?

also, if you want side surrounds JDSMOKE is right. you might benefit from the f/x's more so than the rti's- especially for movie playback; and the f/x's are timbre-matched to RTI's as well.

EDIT: you can listen to RTI's at Tweeter Stores. Is there one near to where you live?

    No tweeter stores.:(

So If the speakers are gonna be beside me then I want the FXi5 and if they are gonna be behind me I want the RTi6 or 4?

My room is very small. It is 11 by 14

    I will be using a HK AVR635

I have a set each of the RT35i and the RT25i, which were basically earlier versions of the current RTi4 and RTi6.

I actually like the RT25i better as a main 2 channel speaker, but I like the RT35i better as a surround, so I vote for the RTi6 for surround duty. It's midwoofer is the same size as those in your mains and center.

I also like a regular speaker better as a surround instead of a dipolar. Dipolars might have been good with plain old vanilla Dolby Pro Logic, but I think regular speakers are better with todays discreet 5, 6, or 7.1 formats.

    Good luck!

I don't think matching the mid drivers is as important as the tweets.

I use the 4 as my rears and I like them very much. I was using jbl's the 4s blow them away in every aspect. I did not increase the volume but everything is clear and more detailed.

with a room that size rti4's or f/xi 3's will be plenty.

I would still pick the fx's for surround duty over the monopoles. Dipoles are great for movies and bipoles are great for multi-channel music and with the F/x's you can switch between the two. jmo.

    Fronts- RTI-4
    Center-CSI-3
    Sides- F/X300i (Dipole)
    Rears- F/X300i (Bipole)
    Sub- Velo Cht10

    Pre/Pro- Harman Kardon 235
    Amp- Adcom 5300 2ch, 7300 5ch.
