In the current issue of S&V they have no reviews of multichannel music whatsoever, they usually have 1 page dedicated to this along with video dvd's and redbook cds.

There are still plenty of SACDs being released everyday....depends on what your musical taste is. Genesis just announced the completion of 4 of its classic albums for 5.1 SACD release. According to a March 2005 interview of Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason, the SACD of Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" is "definitely happening". On a related note, Roger Waters' just completed opera "Ca Ira" will see its release in September on 2 hybrid SACDs from Sony BMG Masterworks (!!).

Also from March 2005, Justin Hayward of The Moody Blues mentioned on his website that he was asked by Universal to approve the 5.1 surround mixes for the first 7 Moody Blues studio albums. Justin Hayward also appear on the upcoming SACD to the musical version of "The War of the Worlds by Jeff Wayne, which is also being released by Sony BMG (!!).

On the classical front, Mercury added 5 SACD titles for August release from its Living Presence series. Universal added 6 more SACD titles for release in July, adding to the ones it just released in April and May.

And these are the releases that I suspect are of most interest to forum members here.

Edit: A note of interest is that the upcoming Sony PlayStation 3 will support SACD (and Blu-Ray!!). I think Sony, as a hardware manufacturer, is making SACD available at every level....from $100.00 DVD/SACD players to HTiB to high-end players (Qualia stereo-only SACD player). And most hardware manufacturers out there, with the obvious exceptions of Panasonic and Meridian (both being supporters of DVD-A), are SACD supporters. It comes down to the availability of SACD software, the mass consumers' willingness to accept SACD, and marketing. Frankly, SACD will never become a mainstream format since the typical music consumer nowadays prefer downloading (especially when free) and does not care about sound quality. Music has become aural wallpaper and I don't see this trend reversing. It's not really the fault of formats such as SACD, DVD-A, vinyl, or anything else; it's the lowered expectation of the mass market combined with the convenience of downloading.....and convenience was voted the winner over quality. Sure, one can argue that there aren't any software available that the mass consumer wants. But the mass consumer doesn't want hi-rez.....they want downloading. They're saying "the hell with sound quality....I just want tunes." And I will bet that the majority of them are looking for freebies.

    Hmmm....sorry for the rant.
