Dusty in Memphis

If you guys want a GREAT old school sorta pop singer does a great R&B album...pick up Dusty Springfield's Dusty in Memphis. A terrific album. Listening to it, you can hear all sorts of influences....Carole King, Aretha, Burt Bacharach. Most will recognize 'Son of a Preacher Man' (I love Aretha but her version ain't got nothing on this version) but this album doesn't have a bad track on it. As I've said, each song is different but they all work together quite well making a great album as opposed to a record with one or two good songs and a bunch of crap.

Pick up the Rhino reissue, it's a good remaster of the original. You can still hear some analog tape hiss but the recording sounds damn good. Maybe a wee bit hot but I think that's to draw attention away from the tape hiss. Plus, it's got and additional 12 bonus tracks of some really good stuff.

I know that someone has reissued this on 180gm vinyl so I'm off to find it online.....

    This was Dustys best recording for me. Way back when the LP version was THE test record for the female voice. The sax solo is unbelievable, just like it is in your room. Dustys voice is very innocent and vulnerable in the look of love.

    This has been one of my all time favorites for years. The original vinyl pressing is the best. The Rhino CD mastering is also very good. I have a couple of different vinyl releases of it and the Rhino CD. The original vinyl pressing has more background noise, but has dynamics that the others lack.

    Edit - make that the original new-fangled stereo-phonic vinyl pressing. There may have been a mono vinyl release prior to the stereo release.

    I did bag the vinyl reissue some years back and it's in the regular rotation. I also have the original vinyl, I think the reissue is better though YMMV.

    Check out Shelby Lynn's 'A Little Bit of Lovin' - a tribute to DS. Very soulful and sultry.
