Ming Da, Dared or Dodd....All under $500....Ming da has 4 inputs, Dared has remote, Dodd has Polk forum following....Tube heads: any reccomendations of one over the other..BTW, I'll probably be feeding the signal to an Adcom 545. Speakers are SDA2 (pin/blade?) Thanks!

I only heard of 2 of them.. and one i own and love the dodd... I think they are all in the same league with the Dodd being the simplest of circuits, ie: no remote or tone or balance.. not sure of the other brand you mentioned.. it will land in what ya really want and looks in the end, do you need a remote? if not x that off the list... the purist of circuits makes for less noise. have a link for the first brand you mentioned? what tubes and how many do they take? some more seasoned tube heads can chime in and set me straight on the details...
edit, i looked up the ming da and it looks alittle to glitzy to me, all the black and gold.. and alot of tubes in it. never heard it so thats all i can say...MY HT RIG:

let some of the other guys chime in, Looks alone i like the dodd or the dared, simple no nonsense go's to the dodd, no motors involved.. the dared and ming da both use tube rectifiers so if you wanna go that route, or the dodd just uses the 6dj8/6922 for outputs with solid state power supply.... I guess all the obvious, and its subjective
edit: south florida huh, LOL need some classic polks ?MY HT RIG:

all set with the speakers, thanks.....thanks to this board, i've caught the tube fever....it looks like from what i've read, SS power supplies are better than tube rectifiers..less heat, more durability...those big tubes look cool though!

Mike,
Are you looking at the Ming Da on Ebay? If so, be very wary of the seller from Hong Kong. From what I've heard, he doesn't always follow thru with delivery. Just a heads up. But it is a pretty thing, isn't it?"SOME PEOPLE CALL ME MAURICE,

yes, it would look nice in a mirrored shelf....i did some research on that seller...thanks! i usually stay in this country when buying/selling on ebay....someone else in the USA was selling one recently, though

sda2mike,
what did you ever decide out of the three? if you bought one, what do you think? -
i just got back from a 3 week european vacation....somehow, the tube fever, that seemed to have quite the grip on me, went away! my marantz 2270 is sounding oh so sweet! i know, someday i'll make the leap. but for now i'm content. saul marantz did design the 2270 to sonically perform like their best tube designs, so maybe what i've got here is pretty good. but alas, i'm an old hot rodder, i know about the endless mods addiction. thanks for all your help, guys!

I'm surfing on my Dreamcast right now so it would take a while to look up those pre's.
One thing to consider is the type of sound you're after. I know the Dodd use 6922/6DJ8. These tubes sound very different than the 12AX7 and U7 series which are also very common pre amp tubes. IMO and from what I've read around the net, the X7 and U7 tubes give more of that lush, warm, tubey sound while the 6DJ8 and especially the 6922 are more 'balanced' and 'accurate'. I've seen people around the net that won't use 6922 and stick to 6DJ8. They say the 6922 sound too much like SS.

Anyone have the scoop on how Jpzhou sells those Dared pre-amps on Audiogon.com so cheap? All his reviews are awesome. I guess I just don't get it. They're like $700 new retail. But his said new in the box.
Maybe it's one of those things where you just don't ask and enjoy the sharing.
He has lots of positive feedback on audiogon -
