Last night I received my errrr, back up copy of Incredibles, which was errrrrr backed-up on a DVD-. I get home put it in my Marantz and all I get is disk error. WTH!! This puppy is my most expensive DVD player why does it not work. In the bedroom I have a tosshiba sd2800 not worth much, pop the dvd in and by golly it works. Unhook the tosh hook it up to the mane system and watched part of the movie. I am and still am peeved that my marantz does not play my back-ups (I shall call them) what gives ?
In the past I have received back-ups;) of Shrek2 and it worked on my Marantz. But on the disk it's not written dvd- or dvd+ . How can I be sure I know what blanks to buy?

My suggestion? Start saving for/building a Home Theater PC, with at least a terabyte of hard drive space, and start "backing up" your movies to the hard drive, eliminating the discs altogether.
The discs & the burning process are the problem, not the DVD player. Your Tosh player is just less sensitive to the burn errors. Yours & my Marantz are overly sensitive to burn errors.Bob Mayo, on the keyboards. Bob Mayo. -
Thanks,
I plan on modding my xbox with a 180 or 200 gig drive sometime over the summer.
What I find odd is that, shrek2 plays no problem the same with what ever that movie is that ends in boy where he is super strong.
With the xbox moded all movies will be stored in the HD. If I really like them I will keep it. We are not big on watching tons of movies over and over. -
I've done a TON of reading on this problem, and most people agree that the errors are caused during the burn process. There are just too many variables to deal with.
The DVD burner in the PC has to match up perfectly with the blank DVD's, then the DVD's have to match up perfectly with the DVD player, on so on. Your computer has to run very well, meaning very fast with alot of memory. It is just a big pain in the ****.
SO, you can easily avoid ALL this by just not burning to DVD. You have a good idea there by modding the Xbox, that should do the trick.Bob Mayo, on the keyboards. Bob Mayo. -
It's not worth the hit and miss options of burning. At least like you have anthoer player which will play them. I would have been even more peeved if I only owned the Marantz.

Willow,
I know your pain. I've made many 'backups' (140+) and I occasionaly have problems where they won't play on my high end Denon, but they will play on my cheapo bedroom Panasonic, but then again, sometimes, its just the opposite! It won't play on the Panasonic, but plays perfect on the Denon. Unfortunately, when you call the manufacturer, they will laugh at you and say that they cannot guarantee playback of DVD+/-R/RW. You just have to deal with it. I've now resorted to backing up just the main movie since most of the problems I was having were with menus.
Always choose good quality media and stick with what seems to work best for you. I like the Fuji branded (Japanese manufactured) Tayio Yuden 8x +R media. It has given me the best results and allows me to burn at 16/12/8/4x. I usually burn at 12x.For rig details, see my profile. Nothing here anymore... -
thanks. I'll keep that in mind. I my self don't have a burner, I have a friend who makes my backups;) . I will ask him to try different ways for the next burn.

I just quit doing it. I got sick of it, so I stopped. I backed up about 65 movies. So far I played and tested about half, and everyone except 1 has HUGE error problems on my Marantz. With the cheapo Sharp DVD player, most work fine, but there have been a couple that had errors show up on the Sharp. The errors that show up on the Sharp are soooo bad they actually shut down the Marantz. It literally locks up and shuts off.
So, I just put a temporary stop to backing up. I'm waiting until I can afford to build/buy a HT PC. That will be sweet!! All my movies accessible via the PC, organize & sort just like MP3's. It will be great. And no more burn errors.Bob Mayo, on the keyboards. Bob Mayo.
