Sony PS2 games & Players

I took my son to a local Game stop store (they buy/sell/trade games) and he picked up a new Lego Star Wars Game and could not get it to play in his PS2. He and my wife took the game back and were told that the game was a "Blue Backed Disc" and that these discs will not work in an older PS2 player. Apparently my son's machine is an older 2000 series machine and the newer discs will only play on the series 5000 machines.
Has anyone else heard about this or are we being fed a line of bull from the counter-monkey?

i haven't heard of this before.. and i own the original PS2 myself. I know Sony upgraded the 'newer" PS2's.. and if i'm not mistaken.. they never released a "fix" or patch for the older PS2's.
My old PS1 had problems with some Zenith TV's.. and Sony was not very helpful back then either.
The "counter monkey" might be right..
sorry i'm not much help.PolkFest 2012, who's going>?

I just got off the phone with Sony Tech support and they said that the series (model) number has nothing to do with the game not playing and that any PS2 game should play on any PS2 machine. Looks like it's time to get a different machine.

I can't see Sony licensing any games that would not work on their own systems.
I am wondering, too, if its a pirated copy. I have tons of CD-Rs that are blue. -
It was brand new still in the wrapper.

My son has same game and it is blue backed. Purchased at ToysRus. His PS2 is older and it plays fine. They should exchange the game for you, since they are $40 a pop.

It played fine in my daughters PS2. Got them to swap a newer used player for his and everything is now working as it should.
