thia is the receiver I am using. when watching movies everything sounds great until we get to a scene where an explosion or heavy bass, we find we must turn doen the receiver. Is this dur to the fact the receiver does not have enough power or is this just how everyone elses system is.
Thanks
Thanks

Bump....
anyone ? -
why do you feel like you have to turn down the receiver? Is it distorting or just too loud? If it's too loud, it's just doing it's job. If it's distorting that's different...
What speakers are you using? -
Polk thanks for the reply, it's too loud !!

Yep, it's supposed to be loud...as long as it's not distorting you should be fine.
However, some receivers and DVD players have something like a 'night' mode that reduces the dynamics of movies...you may want to check into that and see if you've got that somewhere and turn it on.
I personally don't care for it because dynamics add a lot to sound (it's one of the four properties of sound after all - pitch, timbre, duration, and dynamics), but it'll decrease the volume of those explosions and such... -
it's too loud !!
Then your to old
Sounds like the reciever is doing just fine.Setup:

Explosions are supposed to be LOUD! That is the way that the director/sound editor wanted it to be. Modern movies strive for realism.
If you don't like the sound effects that loud, try using the compression feature in your setup menu (usually in the Dolby Digital area). Yamaha might have another name for it like Night Mode or something. It will make the quiet scenes louder and the loud scenes softer so that there is less dynamic range. Purists scoff at these settings though. For rig details, see my profile. Nothing here anymore... -
ok. I don't mind it loud and it's not at all distorted, I have never heard distortion on this system.
We have attached neighbours and people who live upstaires garden homes/terrace homes.
I will try the night mode ( don't want to). Maybe I could try night mode and beef up the bass a tadd.
What about the dynamic range it's set to max I wonder if it's set to standard if this will make a difference. -
if you have the dynamic range cranked up (i didn't even know there was a dynamic range setting) then that is your poblem.

Yamaha has three settings, max(for movies) standard(for Tv) and the last one(can't remember).
I will do that tonight to see if it's better. last night I was having issues with my dvd player -
If you have the range set to MAX you will get a large difference between dialogue and action. Try the MIN setting and you will not get such a loud difference with the action. It is the setting I use for all my daughters sleepovers when I do not want to be awakened by explosions or worse.
