styrofoam mod

Hey bass experts:rolleyes:

Can you tell me what is wrong with what I did. or in your opinion what this will do.

I have a pc+ that I have sitting on a slab of granite. This mod made a big improvement in the sound, much tighter and clearer. The problem is the sub is sitting along a row of 75 year old windows and really gets them rattling during high impact sound :D

So I brought home a piece of 2 1/2" thick styrofoam ( the kind used for insulation. very rigid and dense) and put it under the granite. It made a huge reduction in the window and house shaking but I'm afraid I will lose some of the svs kick in the foam.
The sound is different, maybe a little clearer( ? ) and I find myself running the bass a little "hotter".

I ran a spl response curve with and without the styro and there is neglible difference.

So what do you think? Is the response curve a good indication of what I am hearing? And am I going to lose some sound in the styrofaom?

I guess I am asking if this is so stupid that I absolutely should not do it or if it sounds like an ok solution to windows rattling.

thanks..............HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY.......kevin

If it reduces the window rattling and sounds good to you, go for it.

In a way it kinda sucks, though, 'cause one of the main reasons for getting a super sub like yours is so you can feel the bass. The styrofoam appears to be masking this effect. So you gotta choose between either tolerating the rattling windows or minimizing the tactile power of your sub.

Now you got a good excuse to upgrade your windows. :p

I say stick with it, I hate my rattling windows. I bet you will still feel the bass anyway :p

Maybe your house needs a tweak, not the sub :)

If it's the glass that's rattling, caulk around the edges to tighten up the fit- you'll also save some cash on heat & AC.

With all due respect I don't think you are giving the SVS enough credit. The windows are shaking because the walls are movin in and out and up and down:D

When it was built in 1918, subwoofers and U-571 were not available yet;)
