The new CD will not be released until June 7th, but it has been leaked on the internet, and I was able to get a copy early. (I Have it on pre-order) This is an 8 song set that takes the listener on one hell of a ride.

Track 1: "The Root Of All Evil"- This song is a continuation of the AA saga that Mike Portnoy has been writing over the last 3 CD's. ("The Glass Prison"-Six Degrees, and "This Dying Soul"- on Train of Thought) The first two songs covered the first five steps of alcoholism, how many steps this covers I have no idea, but the song is just fantastic. Hard riffs, and great drumming....classic DT.

Track 2: "The Answer Lies Within"- After the hard start this song really slows the tempo down. I am not big on DT ballads, but this one is one of the better one's in recent memory.

Track 3: "These Walls"- After the mellow melody, DT comes back strong on These Walls. The band takes a little different direction with this song. Has a great melody, but Jordon Rudess (keyboards) really shows his diverse playing. This is a fantastic song, so much so that it could be a radio hit, if properly edited.

Track 4: "I Walk Beside You"- Here I was thing "great another ballad" when seeing the name of the song. I was so shocked at what I was hearing. Being classic DT they give tribute to another band with their playing style. They never come out and say it, but you hear the resemblence in playing. This one is no different, but surprisingly DT gives tribute to Van Halen. If they would have thrown Hagar behind the mic, you would have thought it was Eddie and the boys. It was a great effort, and a good song.

Track 5: "Panic Attack"- Now after the surprise by the last song, classic DT comes rearing it's head again. This is one kick **** song. So fast, then slows the pace just a bit during the singing, but when James is silent the pace is so in your face. It makes you want to bang your head until you can no longer handle it. [:0]

Track 6: "Never Enough"- I have yet to give this song a chance, I really have not formed an opinion on it. It's just a different direction on it. It reminds me a bit of Queensryche. That is not a bad thing, but the song has surprised me by the sound of it. Obviously by my writing you can tell that this one has me stumped.

Track 7: "Sacrificed Son's"- This song pays tribute to the victims of 9/11. The opening of the song you hear news clips of the reporters who were watching the whole thing unfold in front of their eye's. Some powerful words. As for the song, it starts off fairly slow, but towards the middle the pace quickens and takes the song on a whole different direction. It was a great change of pace and make the song worthy of multiple listens. The song clocks in at nearly 11 minutes.

Track 8: "Octavarium"- Now after approximately 54 minutes of prog rock bliss the title track literally picks you up off you feet and makes you wonder what the hell just happened. Even if you did not like what you heard the first 54 minutes this song would make it worth the wait. Clocking in at a full 24 minutes (that's right 24 minutes!!), what a way to end a fantastic CD. I do not want to say anything about the song, because if you ever get the chance to listen to it, you would understand why. I do not want to diminish the impact the song has with words.

But lets just say if this is DT's last CD, and Octavarium is their last song...wow, what a way to go out!!

9 stars out of 10. The VH tribute, and the strangeness of Never Enough brings it down a star.

Well I got the CD off of EMule.

Second, you would have to hear the song, again do not want to say to much, but I did read where a few other fan's had said this too after hearing the last song.

Now do I believe it....hard to say, but probably no. But after hearing the words it makes you wonder.

Second, DT has been really against any type of discussion regarding this CD. So much so that they have shut down the Octavarium forum on all of their websites. (The bands personal websites and DT website) Now it could be because they are pissed about the early release, or.....

They were never that pissed when Train of Thought was leaked. So again speculation on my part, and partly of other fan's. I hope they don't, but like I said what a way to go out if they do.

Probably just reading to much into it.

I dont think DT has anything to worry about.

A band like them has extremely devoted fans. I by their CDs everytime regardless if I can get it for free online cause Im wanting to support the band.

Same with Nightwish, Rush, Fates Warning and Type O Negative.

Im sure their album sales wont be hurt by this.

With pop stars its different. A pop band is just a flavor of the month and their fans arent nearly as loyal or devoted. Besides, pop bands only usually have one good song on their albums whereas bands like DT have great albums all the way thru.

As to this being their last at bat, I doubt it. These guys do this because they love music not because they want fame and chicks. My proof? What do they do when theyre not recording and touring with DT? They go out and record and tour with side projects! Thats a whole lot different from say the band formerly known as Metallica taking 3 years off for therapy and jet skis.

This is a great album. I've listened to the last song several times, and I can see where those words could be interpreted as 'this is the end" for DT...but IMO that's a pretty big stretch given the entire song taken into context...

I actually interpret the song completely different...

Trust me...this isn't their last album..........they're just getting started...

PolkM did you get it off EMule, or did you get it somewhere else?

Also what is your personal thought on the whole CD? Better than ToT or on par with albums past?

Yeah I grabbed it off eMule. I have no moral issues with doing this because I'll buy it the day it comes out...

I really like this album overall. It has a lot in common with ToT with some of the heavier riffs and stuff, but I also see a bit more of the old DT in this album that in the last couple.

Scenes from a Memory is my all time favorite album (from any group), and this one isn't going to replace that or anything, but it's an awesome album.

Mac, the whole album is there on eMule. Just do a search with audio files for "Dream Theater Octavarium real" and you should find a .rar or .zip file with the album. I'm not advocating stealing music, and you should go buy this album as soon as it comes out to support the band (and I know you will) - but like I said, I have no issue with getting an early peek.

    Mac,

Also use server Razorback2. Change the server when you go to the servers page. You will find it hidden among all the sex servers.

Almost everyone uses Razorback2. Once you log onto it, you will and can find any music/movie/program out there. But like I told PolkM, if you download music do it in spurts, and delete what you download (or put the file in an area that is not accesed by Emule) because the Ria, and MPAA pound Emule very hard.

And it also may take a while to download, because you are new to it. But EMule runs off of a Upload Vs. Download system. Basically they want to see your Upload 3 times higher that your download. Once that happens your download speeds come faster. Basically they are trying to keep the leachers off of there.

I keep a few programs like the game Grim Fandango, Winrar, Nero, Sygate, and a whole bunch of MXC T.V. programs that no one really cares about if they are shared or not.

    PolkM,

Yeah SFAM was my all time favorite, with Awake running right behind it, but I am finding this CD to be right up there with Awake, I got tired of listening to ToT after a year, but this one maybe in my player for years to come. I really like it that much. A lot of "old" DT in it. Maybe thats why I like it so much.

    WTF is Emule?

I first thought you were referring to a website and found this stupid site that has only poetry and stuff on the royal family. Im kinda doubting thats what you guys are talking about.

Ive been using Shareaza since Kazaa Lite collapsed and it sucks. Slow as Methuzelah.

Does this thing have a media player like Kazaa and the others did? Those are very handy to have one built in, espcially for viewing ****....er..I mean videos as theyre downloading to see if you actually want it or not. :D

Well when you set it up again use the server: Razorback2.

Then Connect to the server, after connecting go to transfers, copy this link:

    ed2k://|file|Dream%20Theater-Octavarium%20(The%20Real%20One).rar|725633584|3DA394E8BD81E71F5B16E5F4B2E10D0F|h=RFGTW2BQVG76LQMC6YM54IH5ARUBOECV|/

Paste this link in the transfers area, (in the huge white space under the file name) When you right click it will say paste EDK link, and paste it.

The file will automatically show up. begin to setup downloading. The file is in RAR/Zip format and it contains the whole CD.

    Hope this helps

I really like emule because you can find anything...I MEAN ANYTHING.

Programs, hacks, music, very rare music, videos, movies, tv shows. You name it. But again like I said before be very careful what you keep on file, MPAA, RIA hound this site a lot!! So if you are downloading a lot of music/movies, move it to a hidden folder after downloading.

That wont be a problem. I mainly download por.....dammit..I mean videos...that are....um...most definitely not of a pornographic nature!

Kazaa Lite was the best. Fast downloads and easy to use. Of course its DOA now.
