I just found this article on do it yourself tube traps and think I am going to give it a try at some point.
You all might find this usefull as well.
No mention of the total cost but very thorough

    Obviously the guy in the article is single! The Mrs. would freak with only one or two of them set up.

    so these placed at semi-random just break up any reflections off the walls?

    You need to play with the placement and they will actually absorb bass and other sound. I believe the intent is to keep the sound from bouncing around and cluttering the room. If you look into nice HT rooms you will see various forms of acoustic treatments.

    Pannels can go on the walls in a very decrotative way, if you are capable of comming up with decorative ways.
    That is why I am getting the future wifey into it.
