7.1 Question

Ok I have a 25L x 17W room and my rear speakers are all the way back against the wall about 10 feet behind me and 16 feet appart.
If i go 7.1 is it ok to mount the rear surrounds about 3 feet directly above the surrounds? And how far appart should they be?
And is it worth going through the trouble, time, and money or not?

Try to get them between the surrounds, so you can get the full effect of ES/EX soundtracks.

I guess it depends on your room, mounting them higher might let the sound carry easier to your listening position. You could experiment by putting them on a ladder and listening. -
my layout will look verry similar to your diagram.
ok i just wasn't shure if 7.1 only worked well with surrounds that were placed beside the listiner then the surround backs behind the listiner like this

This is like my layout, TOP-DOWN perspective. -
I would experiment, I would drag wires across the floor and prop speakers on ladders or boxes or even hang them from brackets. listen to how they sound for a movie or at least several of your favorite trailers.
Once you figure where you want them then run wires and all that fun stuph.Skynut

Thanks for looking -
I'm with skynut- nothing beats experimentation, because every room is different- I thought I had my surrounds in the right place, but moving them back about 3 feet made a world of difference...
For 7.1, you need to get something like lord of the rings, or a test disc... there aren't many discs with more than 5.1Gallo Ref 3.1 : Bryston 4b SST : Musical fidelity CD Pre : VPI HW-19
Gallo Ref AV, Frankengallo Ref 3, LC60i : Bryston 9b SST : Meridian 565
Jordan JX92s : MF X-T100 : Xray v8

Any "6.1 DTS-es Discrete" disc will be a good experimentation disc. I think LOTR special editions are in 6.1 DTS-es, but not the original plain editions that i have- just Dolby 5.1 ex. =(
Gladiator is my top pick for 7.1 in my collection. Hannibal and Terminator 2 are both OK- but they're processed in "5.1 DTS-es Matrix".
i wonder when they'll actually come out with "7.1" for DVDs. Not that they REALLY have to- DPL IIx makes everything sound quasi-7.1 - and the results can sometimes be so good in my little room of 20L x 14W x 10H it's crazy.
