So tube preamps....I have the AE...tubes wear out right? So it would be best to not leave the preamp on all the time right? How quickly do they burn out? Anyone have general tips for a guy new to tubes?

Thanks in advance!

Turn it off when not in use.

I think yours runs a triad of 12ax7, and a 6x4 rectifier. Tube life can vary in different preamps, depending on the voltages they are designed to run.

On 12ax7's expect 8000-10000 hours on avg, 6x4 about 3000-5000 hours. That being said, it's always good to have some extras (that you like) on hand, incase something checks out early your down time is minimal.

    Cheers,

The fun thing about tube gear is changing out tubes to see what you like. You'll have to experiment with various tubes. Lots of great choices for 12AX7's. IMO, the EH's you already have sound very good (consider those your baseline for comparison with other tubes). I use Groove Tube 12AX7M's. A few fellas on this forum like the Sovtek 12AX7LPS. And eventually you'll want to try NOS (new old stock) tubes.

How do you like the AE so far? What did it replace and how is it different from what you had before?

It hasnt replaced anything really, it is basically going to be my bedroom 2.1 system. my reference is an old Rotel RSP-980 that I also use for stereo. I havent had too much of a chance to compare A/B but I definitely like the AE better than the Audire Diffet I tried out. Its so much smoother.
