Marketing Weight

I recently sold my SVS PB12-ISD sub. The SVS website says it weighs 78 lbs., but when I shipped it the total weight was 62 lbs. I also noticed this weight discrepancy with my Hsu STF-2. I could be wrong, but it didn't seem to weigh any more than 25 or 30 lbs, but the website says the shipping weight is 44 lbs. Anyone else ever notice this?
Wouldn't surprise me at all if the weight of subs were a bit exaggerated because consumers consider a greater weight to be better quality. And, of course, like many other audio manufacturers who inflate stuff like watts per channel, sensitivity, etc., they are trying to get the marketing edge. Just wondering if the weight of subs are used in the same way.

Make sure you're doing an apples to apples comparison. Most sub companies use shipping weight, not actual weight. The shipping weight could include all packaging and pallet material if applicable.
Granted the discrepencies your seeing would need to include something beyond cardboard and foam. Were they shipped with wood? There is no genuine justice in any scheme of feeding and coddling the loafer whose only ponderable energies are devoted wholly to reproduction. The box and packaging material only weighs a few pounds, at best, so there should be a nominal difference between actual weight and shipping weight (unless you have one of those gargantuan subs that ship in a crate).HT/2-channel Rig: Sony 50 LCD TV; Toshiba HD-A2 DVD player; Emotiva LMC-1 pre/pro; Rogue Audio M-120 monoblocks (modded); Placette RVC; Emotiva LPA-1 amp; Bada HD-22 tube CDP (modded); VMPS Tower II SE (fronts); DIY Clearwave Dynamic 4CC (center); Wharfedale Opus Tri-Surrounds (rear); and VMPS 215 sub

Hmm, my packaging weight about 25 lbs with the sub out, of course it included a wooden pallet and othe items it appears you didn't have. It was just a thought as to why there might be a difference.
As for shippers scales: I know every time I shipped my LSi's with the same packaging, the weight was different by 2-3 pounds each time.
Overall, I don't think they use it as a marketing tool, but rather a maximum weight that the sub would weigh on a shippers scale... Who knows, ask the mfgr...There is no genuine justice in any scheme of feeding and coddling the loafer whose only ponderable energies are devoted wholly to reproduction. Anyone know if actual weight (incl. box and packing materials) is different from shipping weight?HT/2-channel Rig: Sony 50 LCD TV; Toshiba HD-A2 DVD player; Emotiva LMC-1 pre/pro; Rogue Audio M-120 monoblocks (modded); Placette RVC; Emotiva LPA-1 amp; Bada HD-22 tube CDP (modded); VMPS Tower II SE (fronts); DIY Clearwave Dynamic 4CC (center); Wharfedale Opus Tri-Surrounds (rear); and VMPS 215 sub

The shipping weight of one 2.3TL is 180lbs. The actual weight is 155lbs. That's 25lbs. of box and packing material, so I don't think 16lbs. is out of line for your sub.Political Correctness'.........defined
