Here is my monday helpdesk call from hell! This is when you know it's going to be a long one.

Me: Locate the Internet Explorer icon on your desktop, then double click on it to launch an internet webpage.

Him: I'm not on my desktop, I'm on my laptop.

Lord give me strength!

    My favorite is this:

IT Pro: What operating system are you running?

    Customer: umm, Microsoft Office.

    Sadly this actually happens.

I gave customer support for banking software for 4 1/2 years. Let's just say you don't need a college diploma to work in a bank.

I went to college. Based on some of the people I graduated with, a college diploma doesn't convince me of anyone's intelligence. :D

Yep, I experienced that one personally. I managed a fairly large IT division for years before retirement, and took all the "I can't deal with this #*! moron" calls from the technical staff. My favorite:

User: That tech has me so confused and he won't listen to me.

    Me: Okay, go ahead.

User: Who are you calling a *ucking gourd head?!!

Evidentally, the guy was bald, and more than a bit vain about it. I nearly popped a vein choking back the laughter.

When I get helpdesk calls like that, I usually close out the helpdesk ticket with 1 of 3 resolutions.

    PEBCAK

    Layer 8 issue

We had a guy interview for a position we eventually filled with someone else. We asked him what kind of PC's he has at home and if he built any from scratch. His answer:

"Yeah, I built my current machine. It's a 486 that I overclocked to 286mhz. I use it for programming."

We knew this WAS NOT our man!

Sounds like a "seat-to-keyboard interface problem."

    RTFM!

I had installed a windows PC in a Pharmacy of ours and I was training the tech's how to use it. One old lady was at the computer and I asked her to use the mouse and click on the icon that I pointed to on the screen.

She picked up the mouse off the counter, moved it to the screen, and tried to tap the damn thing on the monitor and I lost it.

    Those people DO exist.......sadly.

ROFLMAO!!! You were probably talking to William Shatner!:D :D:D

I've had to deal with some of these situations & I'm not even an IT person! I just work with 2 old morons who think computers are evil & go out of their way NOT to learn or retain anything they learn about them!

Many years ago when I worked at a local hospital. After asking a lady 20 questions and determining that her terminal wasn't powering on. I asked if she had a lamp or something to plug into the outlet to check if it works. Her response: Oh, we don't have any lights, there's a blackout.

I've used the first 2 with my users, but what is a "Layer 8 Issue"?
Oh, you hate your job? Why didn't you say so? There's a support
group for that. It's called EVERYBODY, and they meet at the bar.

Layer 8 is a user issue :) It comes from the OSI networking model, as explained here- http://www.commsdesign.com/design_corner/OEG20030415S0027?_loopback=1

Layer 8 is one beyond networking.... it's just the user.

ID10T... maybe this will give you a clue- http://ars.userfriendly.org/cartoons/?id=19990211

PEBCAK, as already explained, means Problem Exists Between Chair and Keyboard, which would of course be you, the user. :D
