John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers - Cookin' Down Under

I've been a John Mayall fan for nearly four decades. Sadly, I've never had a chance to see a live gig.

His latest album "Stories" floored me to the extent that I wrote my first ever fan letter about a month ago. His wife, Maggie, emailed me about a week ago, thanking me for the letter (with apologies that John didn't have time right now to personally write back because he's finalizing "Road Dogs" -- his soon to be released album), and indicating they put together a DVD of a live gig in Sydney, Australia that John suggested I see. So, I thought what the hell and ordered it. I received it yesterday and, to my surprise, it's personally autographed by John. The sound and picture quality is nothing short of excellent. In fact, I now feel that I have been to a live gig.

I was about ready to throw out the box (which seemed a bit large for a single DVD) when I looked at the bottom and found it was a loose piece of cardboard with "please look under here" written in tiny script. Here's what I found:

    That is so cool! I assume you ordered direct from him. I love it when artists take the time to appreciate their fans as much as we appreciate the artisits.

    That is awesome! I had never really heard of John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers (well, I knew Clapton and some others played with him in the 60s, but that was about it) until I ordered one of the CDs from the "Martin Scorsese presents The Blues" series...the soundtrack from the Wim Winders film from that series. There is one track on there from JM and the Bluesbreakers...."The Death of JB Lenoir" and it is just brilliant. Far and away the best cut on a very good soundtrack album full of great blues. So I went onto yourmusic.com and order the best of John Mayall and The Bluesbreakers...should be arriving any day. Can't wait to hear it...and good to hear that he is still around and treating his fans so well.

    heiny9: Yeah, the cool factor of it is beyond description by me. It's a very personal treasure in my music collection now.

    woodyjacobs: I have somewhere around 30 Mayall albums, most on vinyl I bought new. I highly recommend "Stories" as a future purchase. Just like fine wine, Mayall's music and message becomes better and better with age. I owe very much of what I know and appreciate about blues from Mayall's tributes to such artists as JB Lenoir. The credits on his album covers throughout the years have taken me on a life-long musical odyssey.
