I really like the Denon players.

If you can snag a Denon 1600, that would be really good. I've got the 910 and it's beautiful, better than the 1910 IMO and according to test results I've seen...although the 1910 should still be a great unit for your needs and will be easier to find...

I assume you're aware of the Secrets reviews?

That's not necessarily the final word on DVD players, but it's a good resource...

    Thanks

I second the Denons. I have a 1910 and will vouch for it's excellent PQ and overall quality.

The only thing I really see at AA is THIS

I don't know anything about that player, but it's in your range.

There are a few 910s on Ebay right now... I know you won't be using this, but the 910 also has very good CD playback...video is the best I've seen yet...

If you're a stickler for PQ, then Denon is a must.

For any of the new Denons, don't forget to check out Ultimate Electronics. Their prices at the soon to be closing stores should of dropped by now.

    Steve,
Although the Denon 1600 was a great player based on a popular Panasonic design, it is a slugish player and it is notorious for having a problem with the spindle motor that usually requires a repair. Buying one used is a slight gamble. The newer models are a good bet though.

I second a referal to the Secrets Benchmarks. They are one of the few places that objectivly looks at the video quality of progressive players. There are so many DVD players out there that generate garbage on their progressive outputs.

and yet that Benchmark has the DVD 1600 ranked in the top ten or so...a perfect example of why that review alone doesn't tell half the picture.

If you hadn't said anything about the 1600, I would have no clue, and it's ranked well above the 910, which is in turn ranked above the 1910 in that review...

The Benchmarks looks at speed, but they have no way of knowing if updated firmware improve on the original score or if reliability is a long term issue.

Like I said, the 1600 is a great player and it may be worth buying used, if you are willing to accept that it may need service at some point. I looked at buying one that the owner admitted had the spindle problem. I called a local Denon service center and it was going to be about $100 to fix the spindle motor. I would have bought it if the price were better, but the auction ended up going for a couple hundred. I personally think the one in the Flea Market is priced about $75 too high. He thinks it might be under warranty, but I highly doubt it. Denon DVD players only have 1y warr. (unless he bought extended)
