What are they, how do they work, what do they do.........

If ya look at a file, how can you tell what type of codec you need? (don't know if this is even a valid question)

Do certain programs require certain codec's or are they a universal thing between programs that you just have to download onto your computer for any program to reference?

I've done a quick search but nothing that really goes into what they are or anything......
comment comment comment comment. bitchy.

This site has a lot of info. It seems to me a codec may be a sub-set of computer code which can be integrated in software written by others. Kind of like an engine??

Codecs are used anytime you have to play a file that is "encoded" or antime you are trying to "encode" a file. These are usually video or audio files, but can also be for data that is encrypted/compressed. Most of the time you are dealing with MPEG, AVI, WMA, etc.
Usually, its something that the software installs and you don't even need to worry about it. Once and awhile, something will pop up and you will find yourself searching for one, but they are very specific to the operation you are trying to do, ie: convert AVI to MPEG2, or convert WMA to MPEG4. The software companies sometimes sell the codecs as extra. For example, NERO (Ahead) sells some of their codecs as upgrades for those that don't already have the Ultimate package.
For rig details, see my profile. Nothing here anymore...
