hi everyone i've just discovered this board and it seems great.
i just bought an mr2 and want to upgrade the sound. so far i bought an alphasonic 5 channel amp (pmz12005a) a 8" polkmomo sub. i was planning on getting the mmc650's for the front door. in the rear i have 4" speakers and the problem is that polk doesnt make anything to fit in there. i was thinking about the infinity kappas42.5i. any suggestions of what 4" speak would go good with my set up?? thanks for the help

dont buy rear speakers, then with the money you saved buy the momo or db components instead of the coaxials

Agreed. With a car that small rear speakers are pretty much pointless.

Instead, like Cody said, use that money to invest in a set of MMC6500 components and use your front amp channels to power the tweeters and the rear amp channels to power the mids. I think youll be much happier with the sound.

Most definitely you should go with just front speakers. I have a 2-door Jeep and Mac has a four-door Dodge Ram, and we're both running just front speakers and couldn't be happier. Oh, wait a mintue.....oh, right, and Cody has a Silverado with just front speakers, too. (Almost forgot him....:D). Your car is MUCH smaller than any of these, so you should be silly happy with just front speakers. Hmm...silly happy.....as I say that......I can just feel my mind letting go of reality...and slipping away....away..........:D :D

I just sold my rears to a friend because I never used them. I like it much better with just the fronts. Clearer and more detailed.

As long as your amp is capable of crossing them over correctly, it can actually sound better.

What are the specs on your amp? Does your HU have a built-in crossover? You'll want to high-pass your tweets arount 2.5KHz, then bandpass your mids between ~80hz and 2.5KHz, then low-pass your sub at 80ish and below. For the bandpass, if your amp doesn't do it, you can high-pass them on the HU at 80 and low-pass them on the amp at 2.5, or vice-versa.

If you use the MMC6500 you dont need to worry about it cause the x-over is bi-ampable and has dual inputs.

Even if it didnt, you run the tweeter off the crossover and then run the mid from 80 Hz and up. A mid will have a natural roll off not much higher than its crossover point.

i'll contest the 'natural rolloff' part of the midrange response... with the 'midrange extension' switch activated on my mm6s (i.e. the lowpass is off), there is a very definite increase in treble, enough to make me thankful for the crossover.

maybe it'd work in a system tuned specifically to include this, but...

Youre right about the MM6. They do tend to roll off higher than they can handle well. However I have mine running from 80 Hz up and they sound great. Although I had to do a little tweaking by turning the treble on my h/u down and my tweeter gain up but it sounds fine.

I had my MMC690's mid running from 80 Hz and up also and it worked great. That again is the beauty of bi-amping. So much more flexibility in tuning.

Right now I'm running my 5.25" mids full-range and I'm pretty sure I'm not missing out too much on the treble stuff.

biamping the mmcs with the HU is ok? i mean is ok to connect the front channels to tweeters and rear to the mids? (using the Xover of course)

Thats fine. Much better than straight wiring them off the h/u.

More power is usually always better.
