First, has anyone ever listened to the Liquid Tension Experiment albums (basically DT without James - all instrumental stuff)? How is it? If I get it, looks like I'll have to go online...and even there my choices of where to buy are limited...

Second, check out www.gigantour.com - that's gonna rock!!!

I have both Liquid Tension Experiment albums and they both ROCK....I much prefer it to Dream Theatre, mostly because I more into musicianship than the opera-like rock that DT does, though I do own Scenes From a Memory. I bought both albums here in Fairbanks Alaska, so it suprises me that you would have trouble finding them in the lower 48.....

Well its also without John Myung on bass. Tony Levin sits in on bass for these 2 LTE albums.

The Liquid Tension stuff is unreal! The LTE2 is the best one I believe. The cool thing about the LTE stuff is it is mostly improsed. The 4 of them recorded the albums over the cousre of like 2 days. Writing and recording in the studio. The first album even has a 20+ minute jam on there where it is totally improvised. Just 4 of the best musicians on the planet jamming away for the hell of it. Nothing rehearsed. All off the cuff.

And if youre into musicianship, you need to check out all of Dream Theater's (not Theatre) albums. These guys are among the best musicians on the planet. Petrucci, Portnoy and Myung all went to Berkely School of Music to study and Jordan Rudess was admitted to Juliard at the tender age of 9!

I just bought these from ebay seller Movie mars, new for $11.50 each...

I've already downloaded a few songs off each album to get my listen on...and they're very cool. I have a couple friends who love DT's music, but just can't deal with Kevin's voice...so this stuff should be perfect for them...

And if the gigantour comes anywhere near Dallas, I'll be going for sure...

Kevin Moore is the first keyboardist that left after the Awake album came out.

James LaBrie is their current singer. Their second actually. The first one kinda sucked.

Actually, his name is Kevin James LaBraie...he uses James because there was already another Kevin in the group at the time he joined...

And he's actually their third singer if you count Chris Collins...but I don't think he counts as I think they were still Majesty when he was around...

I just watched Transatlantic: Live in Europe DVD last night. Not to bad. The 5.1 DD was surprisingly good, the PQ was average, but overall not to shabby of a show.

(Mike Portnoy is the drummer in transatlantic FYI)

Mike Portnoy is probably the best in the world at what he does. I wouldn't call him the best overall drummer, but I think he's the best within that style.

LTE is definitely amazing. I like all of their stuff other than the jam sessions.

The first CD is recorded pretty well, the second is pretty hot. My RTA on the CD player likes to hit the max a lot.

I will definitely try my best to see gigantour! I love old Megadeth stuff.

Join the CD club at amazon. Just have to buy a CD a year, and their "club CDs" (which are a lot of CDs actually), go for under $10 a lot of the time.

Oh hey, check out Liquid Trio Experiment as well. Tony Levin, Mike Portnoy and Jordan Rudess. Quite a different sound from DT or LTE--a bit more experimental sounding, I'd say--but fun.

New album is out next week, but streaming online now. My overall impression is that its very good, but maybe not as 'epic' as the self-title had me thinking it would be.

I"m a big DT fan, that much is probably clear by now. Unlike many, I've really gotten enjoyment out of all their albums. Their earlier work up through Scenes From a Memory is still my favorite (Awake and SFaM are my two favorites), but I also like their last few albums as well, which many people had problems with. The beginning of The Looking Glass is a good example, but I won't ruin the fun and will let you guys discover those on your own.

This new album is definitely more in line with their recent work than a throwback to their early stuff. There's definitely some Octavarium and Systematic Chaos on this album, but I think this album is better than both of those. There are minor throwbacks to earlier stuff as well but you have to dig for them - for example, if you listen you can hear a touch of Pull Me Under starting around 1:50 of 'Behind The Wall', not a melodic copy just some influence and that's the way it mostly is on this album.

There are some throwbacks to other bands like Rush and Yes on this album as well, again not copies just instances where you know when they wrote that part they were thinking of Rush or Yes.

I like their epic 20+ minute songs as well, and was glad to see another of those on this album. On first listen, the one here sounds a bit disjointed and not really all that compelling, but I know I'll need a couple more listens before I can form a coherent opinion on this one.

Generally with their albums the less I like it on first listen the more I end up liking the album in the long term. If that trend continues then this album will ultimately end up somewhere in the top half of the pack. My biggest problem with this album is honestly the title. IMO a self titled album should either be the debut of the band or reserved for their last effort. It's weird to have an album in the middle of your collection of albums be self titled, and yet hopefully that's what's happening here with Dream Theater. This album is not good enough IMO to be their last. So that's my concern, and hopefully they just goofed with the name and don't plan for this to be their swan song, because while this album is very good I don't think it's the best they're capable of.
