oh so if i plug in only my rear speaker into the left rear center, i wont be missing out on any "right" rear sound effects?

no, it's a dual mono signal, both the same (rear center)
5.1
The 5 is
Left channel
Center channel
Right channel
Surround Left channel
Surround Right channel
Add a sub for your .1
add rear center you got the sixth channel
add a second rear center you got the 7th channelDodd - Battery Preamp
