I need power supply help

I have a diy old power supply kit i found and assembled for fun 0 -24 volts but low amps, or possibly MA, i want to use it for my sonic impact but it starts the amp clipping and light blinking and runs out of steam... I had a volt meter hooked up and the voltage holds so im sure its the amperage... how can i improve amperage on a circuit? It has a transformer, small board that i instaled a few caps, diodes? and a power? thing, lol.. with a heat sink on it... what ever that is.. so what would help increase the amps? Its small and i want to do point to point wireing to get rid of the board and stuff it in a small case to match my DIY SI amp... any help is appreciated..

The best bet is to buy a 13.8V transformer, run it through a full wave diode bridge to turn into DC then use filter capacitors. IF you need AC power.

But, why not buy a lead acid gell cell battery and a wall wart power adaptor to charge it with. The battery will give you clean high current power and should only have to be charged once in a while.

well just because i had this already, it has a transformer and all the parts I think you mentioned.. But what is the part that would increase amps? I mean im useing a nice stand alone PS now but its just to big.... and i thought about the wall wort.. but was trying to be creative and at the same time use parts that i had if i only needed to add a part or so... like bigger capacitor? or something

ok, you probably have a transformer w/ 2 leads coming off of it, going to the diodes, then a bigger capacitor, then a 3 pin chip (power supply regulator probably 78xx) w/ the heat sink then a smaller cap... The problem is that the power supply chip probably has a max current of about 1amp and you need more like 2a...

So bottom line is that it's worth the money to just buy a higher rated wallwart.

I cant just buy a larger power supply chip from RS:? if not screw it i'll get the wall wort and call it a day...

    If you want a project:
    http://www.mitedu.freeserve.co.uk/Circuits/Power/1230psu.htm

basically, your power supply is going to be similiar to the bottom half of that picture, you'd have to build the top half... but 30amps should do the trick :)

Thats alittle beyond my knowledge, The output chip is a PQ 8206 motorola, Its not the 3 legged type.. its the silver disk looking thing with a bolt on each side of the pill like center and 2 solid wires coming out the bottom into the pcb

    check out here:

I think there is a chip that does higher current, but your diodes & transformer would have to be rated, too...

I'd just buy a better wallwart

why does my stupid volt meter keep blowing fuses? geez... its a radio shack and its new, anyways... thanks for the help i'll start looking for wall warts ...

The true beauty of the t-amp is that it doesn't have all the AC line garbage. Go with the battery. (and charger). Your volt meter is blowing fuses because you have the leads inserted in the current inputs and are trying to measure voltage.
