So I have an auction going for some headphones. A guy keeps asking to come pay for it in cash (if he wins) and pick it up. Is this a bad thing to do? Could he somehow tell ebay he never received the item but payed me? How should I go about dealing with this person if he does win the auction?

If you're worried about a local pickup, don't do it.

If you want to secure proof that he picked it up, make something up and make him sign it (you too) and give him a copy.

Local pickup is fine overall, but if you have any sort of hesitation about it, why bother at all. You're certainly not obligated to let him pick it up.

No problem, type of a bill of sale that he signs when he picks it up.

I would meet in a public location.

What Brett said is good advice. Another choice for local pick up is to meet in a public place in the day time, maybe bring a friend too.

well right now I live in a Frat house so I'm not very scared of him causing me any trouble in a house full of people just looking for a fight ;). I just want to make sure I cover my **** from an ebay side of things. I guess if he pays in cash he cant prove that he paid either?

I've done local pickup... 3 times? more than once anyway. Never had any problems.

Just pick a public place and if you're worried about ebay feedback +1 on what brettw22 said.

Take a picture, hand the money over... stand beside the guy, shake his hand and take the pic

    ;)

Just get him to sign a paper

So why meet in a public place exactly? Is it better that he not know my address? If he wins, ebay sends him my address anyways I believe.

You should meet him at a local bar bathroom. I think the location alone will discourage him from being a problem, and you could lock him in their for a couple hours after bludgeoning him over the head.

    Good luck.

I've had two auctions for local pick up that was paid for in cash. Both were great guys and never had a problem but I honestly don't know how it could be that big of a deal. Just do it and don't sweat the details. It'll all be good.
