Large setting for all speakers!

Right now, I run all my speakers at small setting except my fronts to large and bass out to both sub and mains setting.

One of the reasons when I listen to 2-ch music I use my fronts only, not my sub. I love the "DIRECT STEREO" mode on my Yamaha RX-V1400. The sound is simply astounding warm and creamy and the bass is superb no need for sub at all even though I have Velodyne CHT-15 and I don't use it for music anymore. because my NAD C272 amp is rated at 150w RMS x 2, has lot of slam and punch for RT800i's. Love it!

Now, how about setting all my speakers to large setting. I use Adcom GFA 7605 125w RMS x 5 which has lot of power as well. I think by doing this it will show the difference in movies too.

I think if you run receiver, use small setting for all speakers but if you got separate amp(s) use large setting for all speakers, make sense! and why not?

What do you think?:)

i would prefer it that way-

if only my speakers could dip that low in the bass.

I have plenty of power, tower speakers capable of good bass and still prefer the small setting. The mids and highs are cleaner when the cabinet resonances are held down since it doesn't have to push bass. The bass just muddies up the middle frequencies.

Do alot of searches on any number of HT forums and you will find that even the highest end systems tend to set them up this way.

To explain why you find this more with multi channel setups than straight 2 channel stereo is that it is increasingly difficult to balance bass coming from more than 1 or 2 locations. With 6 or 8 channels producing bass, the phase cancellations and boosts can be very hard to control without top notch filtering and measurement equipment.

I do run my mains on full for 2 channel, without any subs, but still like the small setting for multi channel stuff.

To each his own, and keep experimenting,

Full range *keyword* surrounds and centers are the shiznit, and are the only way to go...

Speakers with a -3db of 50hz arnt full range and shouldnt be treated as such

I read lot of threads of Large vs. Small setting and finally I decided to go back where I started. I guess I have to set all speakers to small including mains.
    No problem.

    Thanks guys for your help.:)

I prefer "all to small" and believe there are several good reasons to run that way...

But it all comes down to what sounds best to you.

    Hamzahsh,

I totally agree with you on the "DIRECT STEREO" mode. Amazing depth in the sound. I run my arrangement very similar to you in the sense that I listen to music in 2 CH and the fronts are powered with a Rotel RB1080. The other 3 speakers (centre & rears) are powered by the Yamaha RX-V1500. I was thinking of adding another amp down the road for the 3 existing speakers as well as the ability to add 2 additional speakers at a later date. I would probably look at the Rotel 1075.

I'll change some settings and set everything to large and see if there is any difference. The fronts are set to large and everything else set to small. Thanks.

I run the center and rears on small and the front mains on large and in 2 channel, full no sub. I messed around with this for months (and almost drove the wife nuts). In the end this was clearly the best way to go for my setup.

With no sub in the picture something has to be large with the LFE routed to it.
