Set up advice

I have my rti8's now and an energy s10.2.

what would be the advantage of running the 8's on small ? or on large. Many of you will say try it and see.

I can't turn the xover off on my reciever so it's fixed at 80hz.
would the 8's benefit from being set to large ? would the sub benefit from the 8's @large ? what about the reciever ? would the reciever rather push all the bass to the sub ? or share with the 8's.

And lastley on the BM on the receiver Should I set the bass to
1-sub only
2-both?

Thanks

    Willow,
You should experiment with setting the fronts between large and small and see what sounds better to you. I suspect they will sound better set to small. Let the sub do the majority of the deep bass and let the 8's do the midbass and highs.

One advantage to setting the fronts to small is you free up amplifier headroom for the rest of the frequency range.

For the BM setting on the receiver, I would read the manual and see what it says about that setting. It could determine whether the crossover is applied to just the sub or all speakers, which is what you want if you have small surrounds. OR, it could determine whether the sub gets bass from all channels or just the LFE track on movies. That is why you need to read the manual.

FYI, the sub doesn't care whether the fronts are set to large or small. It has a separate amp and should receive the same load no matter what the setting is.

    Willow -

I am not familiar with your AVR. I would suspect that your best sound will be from setting your speakers to small and letting your sub handle the low frequencies. If you have separates or a high-end avr, I will change that comment to let them run full range.

Making the best sound will come from the combination of your AVR and your speakers (source shouldn't affect this question). If you don't have a high end amp, give it a break and set the speakers to small, if you do - might as well get everything the speakers can give (and set them to large).

Of course that is all speculation, just to be safe do what frank said... :D

    Hey Willow

I have my RTi8s set to small. Tried both large and small, and at least in my setting I get better detail in movies when set to small. Let the sub handle the bass.

ok receiver is cut off at 90hz and is this way all the time and can't turn it off. So I am using the unfiltered of the sub. 90 seems a bit high ! can't we localise 80-90 (+)

I don't want to but would I be best to use high level (speaker wire) or use the 90hz xover ? (I would rather use rca input and not the high level)

If the sub is up by the speakers, I wouldn't worry about the 90 X-over.

When I added a sub to my 800's, the X-over at 80 really helped open them up in the mids. That would be my vote...

Don't worry about the 90hz, stick with the pre-amp level input. Using speaker level inputs, you would only get the bass from the front 2 channels into your sub. 80hz would probably be ideal, but 10hz won't make that big a difference.

I have played around and set all speakers to small, it took a tadd of oumph out of the mains but cleared it up a bit. I have it set up for sub out only and not both. Quite enjoying the sound and receiver is pushing them just fine and no excessive heat.
