Looking for a new DVD player. Would like spend under $300. Needs to have DVD-A and SACD capabilities. Does not need to be a multidisk player. Considering a Yamaha DVD-S1500. Any recommendations?

i didn't know they made universal players for under $500. cool.

the only one i can think of is the one i have- you can get it for $200 -$250 at circuit city and on the internet.

    Sony NC-685 5disc changer
    it has:

    progressive scan
    sacd multi-and 2channel

only problem is- no dvd audio.
    H/K Signature 2.1+235
    Jungson MagicBoat II
    Revel Performa M-20
    Velodyne cht-10 sub
    Rega P1 Turntable

I looked at the Yamaha DVD-S1500 sometime last year when I was looking at DVD-A/SACD players. I was pretty impressed with it. I won't comment on sound since I'm not a critical listener, but the only thing I could complain about is how cheap it felt; and you're not gonna get rid of that for under $500 (unless you buy used).

EDIT: Last year I heard that next summer (that'd be this summer), Cambridge Audio was going to come out with a universal player. I would seriously be interested in this if they do it. Does anyone have anymore information about that?

aaharvel - There are universal players for under $100.00 right now. And they are good too. Best Buy is clearing out the Samsung HD-841 for $100.00 (regular price is $200.00) and its clone, the Toshiba 4960, is also available for under $100.00. The 5 disc Toshiba 6915 is also under $100.00.

Otherwise, you can pick up the Yamaha DVC-6770 5 disc universal changer (probably same as the S1500) for under $300.00 from J&R. The Onkyo DV-SP502 is about $250.00 and the upcoming Pioneer DV-588A is way below that.

A little above $300.00 will get you into Denon, Pioneer Elite, and Sherwood Newcastle territory.
