He was shipping the Amperex 7308, until he ran out. It comes with Sovtek 6922's now.

    Cheers,

I found a set of new nos jans 1986 after Russman mentioned them as a best buy... i should be getting some Amperex bugle boy 6dj8's soon... i found. I could get a nib 7308's amperex i found but he wants 150, this a good buy? I dont have the money now anyways... but for future reference...

also, not a huge deal but cool all the same... I had gary install a blue power led instead of the white one that comes normally... so no one else do this, LOL

I'm really digging this pre-amp. Time for a break from upgrades though for awhile this time. focus on the music for a bit.

This pre-amp is dead quiet, has nice bass and drives the parasound wonderfully.. I'm really happy with this purchase.. nice clean look and totally simple. I wasnt sure i was gonna like the small chasis and simpler look but it really looks custom and different then the run of the mill pre's.... hats off to Gary for making a cool affordable piece of gear, I just hope plenty of forum members get in on this great deal.. If not buy mine, lol...

Beautiful. Now that's very high end looking. I suggested this to you before, but just in case you forgot. If you find some GE 6DJ8 with black stuff sprayed inside the glass, grab them right away. Killer tube with beautiful sound. Hell, grab a few extras for me too.

Mine arrived today- awesome packaging, and a nice, thick power cord. gave it a half hour to warm up, then started running it against the Audio Experience symphonies.

    Power amp: Adcom 555
    Speakers: Lsi 9's
    Speaker cable: Signal Cable
ICs: ? SC or cobalt, I can't remember.

With no break-in time at all, the Dodd was kicking th AE's ****. Bass was punchier, highs clearer, overall better presentation. However, I did notice that there's a good bit of crosstalk L/R and between the inputs. Nothing really noticable if you're not trying to find it, but it was there and definitely more than could be found on the AE. Anyhow, I'll post futher impressions after I've listened more.

curious, how did you notice L/R cross talk with no balance control? just wondering.....

I think the Dodd has a high gain so inturn seems punchier then the AE, I mean it is a step up of course but i think the lack of so many tubes and higher gain makes it seem "stronger" for a lack of a better audiophile term, LOL.... The AE is alot warmer id say and laid back... if you want a kick get a Dodd, does have great bass and drives this parasound very nice.. Not so warm and relaxed comparativly... I noticed this with the AE after i went from a parasound ss pre to the tubes , kinda a lack of bass and gain... But as me and gary spoke, its from all the tubes and the tube rectifier that give it that vintage tubey sound and kinda laid back.. did i say that twice :D Like i said before, they both sound good... if you like full or almost full tube comlpliments get an AE, if you like more drive, harder hitting bass and more forwardness get a Dodd... IMO and if i said that right... :)

Yeah, you said that a lot better than I could- the Dodd is a lot more forward, more gain, and stronger presentation. The AE is very warm and not nearly as much gain.

Anyhow, after I noticed the input crosstalk, I unhooked the left input and the right output on the Dodd to see if there was l/r crosstalk... it was about the same level as what I noticed across the inputs. With everything hooked back up, I cued up a bunch of music with fairly wide stereo mixing- Radiohead/Paranoid Android, Depeche Mode/Policy of Truth, Led Zepplin/Lemon Song (first 10 seconds...) and I couldn't pick it out at all- it'd take a song with one dead quiet channel and one thumping channel to actually hear it in practice. My guess is that the culprit is the input rotary switch. Once the Dodd is less shiny & new I might tweak around with that :)

All in all, I prefer the Dodd, at least with the LSi's... I want to run the AE on my friend's klipsh speakers- I'm guessing that it'll win there, 'cause they really need something to take the edge off.

Cool glad they both work for ya and that we have similiar feelings on both, kinda makes ya feel like ya (me) learned something about gear when you can start to hear but also explain the differences as well... Yes the AE would work great on a bright system.

Gary suggests shorting plugs for the unused inputs....I had the same issue, problem solved.

The Dodd has 18db of gain, unless that has changed recently.
