Hi,

I have a pair of Monitor 10A's that came with the peerless tweeters - have a dimple and very ugly :-)
One of them went south last week - the high is almost all gone.
I still can ear something if I put my ear right in front of the tweeter.
I asked Polk support, but the reply was that Polk could only sell me a SL2000 as
replacement - not even a SL1000.
I surfed the bay for a replacement but
no avail. Clearly, I will have to put in 2
SL2000's; otherwise, the speaker will have
different sound because of different tweeters. Did someone replace this year
of vintage M10 with SL2000? If so, what is your opinion?

Thanks,

-fredv-

Yup yup yup, I am still looking at ebay at this hour. These beast is really hard to find. In fact, I am even considering to
buy another Monitor 10 for spare parts,
but most of them had SL2000 or SL2500
tweeters ... I am just wondering whether
my tweeter can be repaired or not ...

    Thanks for the reply,

    1) Peerless made these tweeters until quite recently. They were in PartsExpress's catalog until just a couple of years ago. There were/are plenty in circulation. Also, lots of other speakers (including some off-brands) used them. Cizek, e.g., though hardly an off-brand, IMO, comes to mind. You might even find a cheap pair of speakers on eBAY with the silk Peerless domes in 'em for less than a pair of raw tweeters would cost you.

    2) Are you absolutely SURE the low output from the tweeter is a driver problem? Were I you, I'd at least swap the good and bad tweeter so you can be certain it's not, e.g., a bad crossover cap.

Response to #2 first, I did swap the 2 tweeters and confirmed one is no good, sad. I even bought a used sl2000 from ebay, it just doesn't sound even close the peerless ..... I am going to take the
peerless apart to see I can find any obvious problem :-)

A little off topic, I saw a lot of discussion about replacing SL2000 (silver dome) with RE-1904-1 (not sure this is the correct model, silk dome) in the SDA model. Are you referring to this silk dome? If so, I am wondering this will have similar effect to my 10A which (1) doesn't use sl2000, (2) has a different crossover. Just curious, do you know the peerless model number of this tweeter? If so, can you let me know so that I can look it from all possible sources :-)

Thanks to everyone, this is a great resource for Polk Audio.

The original Peerless model for that tweeter was K010 DT, IIRC. This was NOT the model number PE had for 'em... I do have some old PE catalogs at home and I can check the model number (if I manage to remember to do so).

When it comes to Peerless replacement within the Polk line, they are all the same.

Peerless, the manufacturer, made a tweeter that was useable, but the later versions changed frame sizes, so it wasn't a drop-in anymore.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

Yup, I am indeed watching ebay everyday for a 7 or a 5 that has the Peerless. As a matter of facts, I am also watching the SDA's as an alternative :D Unfortuantely, it either most of the sellers of these only offer local pickup (I live in San Francisco area) or too expensive to ship... I won't give up, I am determined to retain at least a pair of good old Polk at home:mad:

I have the 10A's in my bedroom, and I listen to them more than my wife :D I bought it used a few months ago from local. Boy, that was the best $125 I spent in my life. Cosmetically, it is so so, but sonically, it has been superb until lately :(

I am watching 2 things from ebay:
    1. the replacement tweeter or any 5's / 7's that has peerless.
    2. A nice SDA posted for sale in my area. I don't really care which series. Supposedly, they are all good, right? And no, they won't be in my bedroom, they will be in the family ;)

    Cheers,

I did see those. a bit overpriced if you ask me. that seller.. usually asks to much for his stuff. not that it's in poor quality. but some times he stuff doesn't sell. he rarely relists it again.

but i am keeping my eye on those. not the SDA's i've been looking for. I'd rather have floorstanding big **** SDA's instead. but at this point. i'll almost settle for any SDA's. ;)

Hey guys, two years ago I picked up my SDA 1b's in a system. This poor devil was under pressure from his wife in their new house, and she did not want that 'old stuff' in her new living room. A complete Kenwood system out of the 80's and the SDA's. Everything worked, and I jumped on the whole thing for a hundred bucks. Turned around and sold all the latter-day kenwood stuff on ebay. Then stashed the SDA's for over two years, and finally hooked them up yesterday. Damn me! Better than my Klipsch Heresey's, Pioneer HPM 100's, and yep, even my Dahlquist DQM 7's. Not too far away from my big Marantz HD880's, but they are much more open and sweeter. It is the old one of falling face-first in a pill of dog do-do, and coming up smelling like roses. Really regret taking so long to get these things hooked up. Oh, I sold Polks in my stores back in the early 80's, had two 'snob shops' and we played with all of it.

Hi, Back to the peerless question. To the gentleman looking for them. I have several. Of more interest is that there are two DIFFERENT Peerless that Polk used. I never could understand the different numbers on back of the tweeters and why two orignal black tweeters pairs sound different. I checked and checked and now know why.
The early black peerless with 75441880 was made in Denmark (or is it Holland). They are more defined and more aggresive sounding to me. Very misical but not as smooth as the latter version These were used very early around 1980 and before
The later one 55141081 was made FOR Peerless here in the USA. This one is very smooth and sound somwhat laid back. It was used from around 1980 to 1984 give or take. This is the one I think most people think of when they think Peerless.

As mentioned previously, the Peerless tweeter was never exclusive to Polk and is present in a handful of other manufacturers designs.
