How to max out your system?

I have read some threads on how people max their system at 105 dB or 115dB but was wondering how did they do that (as said in the topic 
)? Sorry for being so ingorant but do I just crank up the volume until the sound distorts (I am guessing no to this). Or do I set it to reference level and watch a loud movie (probably more like this one)?
BTW, I have an SPL Meter and I am sure I am going to need it right?
