Let's Do It On The Floor, Behind The Sofa

I remember Mantis posting that he had installed a surround speaker on the floor behind the sofa and pointing up for a customer. Anyone else have any experience with this? Results?

My sofa is only about a foot from the wall and my girlfriend is not interested in mounting anything, except a fluffy wall hanging, above the sofa on the wall. Running 5.1 with LSi7 surrounds mounted on speaker stands about two feet from the ends of the sofa and about 6" from the rear wall and facing the sofa. Would like to go to 6.1.

Thanks,
Trees

Could you put an inwall speaker behind the couch? I had a basement HT I was helping with the finish work on and we had put all inwalls in, except for the concrete block wall in the rear. The WAF wouldn't allow a stand-alone rear center. I made an oak box/frame to mount the rear inwall speaker in and then hung it on the block wall with a couple of tapcons. It was deemed acceptable!

That may work. Could I timbre match the LSi9s, 7s, and C which make up the rest of the system?

Could I just install the 7 in-wall without **** up the sound too bad? I think that I remember reading that is is best to place the LSi series speakers away from the walls.

    Thanks,

    trees,
the speakers behind the couch firing up works great when calibrated correctly. I used to do that alot with the Wife factor. Polk make LCI inwalls but they will not work behind the couch. They will fire right into it. What about inceiling??? Polk also make LCi inceiling speakers that would be killer. For 7.1 I would use 4 Lci inceiling speakers for killer surrounds. Dude do it up it's really nice and clean. The sound is awesome.

Thanks for the information. I'll eventually move everything downstairs where I can install ceiling speakers. For now, I think that I'll take your suggestion re behind the sofa and calibration.

The women need to be informed that the HT gear, including speakers, are part of every homes decore...not just yours....

once they realize that it is part of the furniture layout , they will insist that it be nice looking gear and speaks...

In addition to the humor, there is some truth to your statement about needing to be informed. I thought tassles and Bose cubes ruled because they're cute. After I put together my new system, though, my girlfriend comes over all the time to use it and she does look at the speakers as furniture, and really likes the cherry finish on the LSis. In fact, I think that she is going to go the same route and put the cubes up on ebay.

Me, on the other hand, will be shopping for a single 7 that fell off someones pickup during a move for my rear surround. Think that I'll head over to the flea market.

If you could buy a speaker the right color, with a couple straps and a high heel....shite, the wife would try and wear the damn things, let alone LOVE them.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

I wouldn't put them behind the sofa on the floor but beside the sofa on the floor but at the rear of the sofa. I may try that as well. I did have the speakers on their back on stands but I will try on the floor( as long as they are not rear ported)

Try putting them facing the wall, angled up and reverse the phase. I mucked around with that when I was in an apartment & didn't want to put screwholes in the walls. It did pretty well, but I ended up hanging them & filling the holes when I left.
