Music Appreciation 101

My 5-year old son, Mitchell, has had an interest in music since he was 2. He's knocked around on various mini guitars we've given him and pounded on the B3 for over 3 years.

At any given time in our home, there is music playing somewhere. It's a life-long passion of mine and something I've always hoped my children would share. Last night, Mitchell had a musical epiphany -- one of many I hope he'll experience in his life. He has a small boom box in his bedroom that he's recently discovered, through age induced patience, can be tuned to many stations. He'll dial in something at bedtime and fall asleep listening.

Last night I tucked him in and was in his younger sister's room doing the same with her when he came running in, breathless with excitement. I asked him what was going on and he said "Dad, you've got to come hear this music!" We walked back in his room and I found he had dialed in Kenny G. He asked "isn't it beautiful!?" I told him it was very nice and asked what it was that he liked so much about it. He responded "Dad, it's like Grandma tells me about Jesus. I can feel it in my heart." My eyes welled up with tears. He asked "Dad, are you okay?" I replied "Yes, Mitchell, I'm fine. Just fine."

And he will...Just last night around 2:00 I was getting ready to go to bed and decided to sit down to listen to some music. No lights...not very loud....Johann Pachelbel's Canon in D Major.
"Dad, it's like Grandma tells me about Jesus. I can feel it in my heart."
As I turned off the amps and headed to bed, I thought to myself..."Thank God for men of talent that can create something that beautiful and moving". I hope your Mitchell feels this way when he gets to be my age.

    Very nice indeed.

I had a similar thing with my grand-daughter Emmy. Bev & I were watching the grandkids for a week so their mom could attend a funeral in deep Texas. While driving them to school I'd say "lets put on some real rock 'n roll." After about 3 days of this, I was taking Emmy to church pre-school (she's 3), I had forgotten to pop in my 70's rock mix CD...

Emmy says: "gwampa, I wanna hear some weal wock and woll."

    Bev was in tears laughing....

I have a 3 year old daughter, her favorite song is "Strange Magic" by ELO. What was really funny though, last night I was playing a mix cd when Joan Jett and the Blackhearts came on with "Bad Reputation" She came running into the living room and started dancing around singing along with the cd. I looked at my wife like WTF? My wife just smiled and said Shrek. Then my daughter looked at me and said "Daddy, why shrek on there?" I tried to explain that the song came out long before it was used in the movie, I am not sure wether she got it or not, but it was cute watching a three year old sing that song.

    COOL!!
My son (12) has taken to listening to jazz and classical with me. He started band this year and is learning the trumpet. He's going to try out for the jazz band soon too. He's really fired up about it! My daughter (9) has expressed an interest in band as well.

It's too bad that most kids aren't taught how to really listen to music anymore. Real rock has all but died, the jazz greats are leaving us one by one. Take the time to teach your kids what good music is all about folks, it's time well spent.

Oh great! Two weeks ago I didn't even know what it meant and made fun of it, now your son actually experiences one at 5! I feel so humiliated :(

    But congratulations! ;)

Smooth Jazz, Clarinet, that sort of thing. The guy takes alot of flack for his style but he' s pretty good at his type of music.

Around 10 years ago, our youngest son at 4 years old had energy to burn and we used one of Kenny G.'s earlier discs to calm him before bed. It seemed to work pretty good and one night when we turned it on, he said very clearly, "oh, no, not that cd!! You know I never can make it past song number 2!!"

    Works for me!

It is great when kids notice something that should be above their thoughts though, I always gotta just smile.

Actually I believe he plays mostly soprano sax, and tenor on some tracks. The soprano sax sounds kinda like a clarinet though. I prefer the tenor sax sound. I have a couple of his CD's. Midnight Motion is a great track on the Duotones CD.
