Hi all -
Am sitting at the library since I now have all the free time in the world. I got RIF'ed last week after 22 years of employment - 12 of the last which were perfect attendance. Not sure what I'm going to do - don't really want to hire into a large company again - Making money for people you don't even know, who could care less about you. Well, the weather up here in Michigan is an unbelieveable 80 degrees today! Maybe I'll take the motorcycle out for a ride after I take the dog to the park - he's patiently waiting for me in the truck outside......Currently do not have a computer at home so you probably won't be hearing from me for awhile.....be back after I get set up at home......Take it easy guys & gals........

That sucks, but it does happen. What type of work do you do? Maybe someone here can give you a bit of help...There is no genuine justice in any scheme of feeding and coddling the loafer whose only ponderable energies are devoted wholly to reproduction. Nine-tenths of the rights he bellows for are really privileges and he does nothing to deserve them. We not only acquired a vast population of morons, we have inculcated all morons, old or young, with the doctrine that the decent and industrious people of the country are bound to support them for all time.-Menkin

Dan,
Sounds like they do not make the best decisions. Like Doro said, F THEM. After 22 years? That is just wrong. Good thing is you will walk right into a better situation with the right attitude. All will go fine I'm sure. If I knew who they were I would boycott their business.

If you're so inclined, the laws for bringing age discrimination suits changed recently. The burden of proof for the plantiff was reduced.
So if you had company in the RIF of a certain "experience" factor, you might want to chat with them.More later,

It happened to me on 2/4/05 after 12 yrs. It was for the best as the last 2 years really sucked. At the time I was concerned but I found another job that I like and make almost as much money starting out as I did after all that time at the other job. The opportunities at the new place will get me well ahead of where I would be in the old job financially had I not lost my job. The drawbacks of course are that I am starting over with accumulating vacation and that I have to relocate. I started a thread a couple of months ago about Richmond or Norfolk. I took the job in Norfolk. I took my severance money and banked it so I have a nice stash right now.
I know it is tough at the moment but things will work out. Maybe not exactly as you want them to but they will work out and a few months from now you will likely look back and say it was a good thing.
I know friends of mine that were left have been working 12-15 hr days with few or no days off in a a given week. Nights/weekends etc. It is a real hell hole now, more than it was before. This company was just named number 307 on Forbes 500 list. It was all about bottom line costs with no regard for past performance or loyalty of those of us who worked there. -
Thanks for the encouragment all! Actually the 1st time I got a chance to access a computer since then - Been having some medical problems to boot - The company was/is Steelcase and they manufacture office furniture - Their bottom line is their only concern - Currently pressed for time but am hoping to be hooked up at home with a computer in the next month or so....Thanks again for the well wishes guys!!HT & Music System:

Dan, that's how it works bro. I also hate the fact that there is very little personal contact between upper managemant and the working stiff like myself in the larger companies. I have been with a company called Victaulic for 25 years now and I just may be in the same position as yourself. The writing is on the wall. They are building multiple new facilities overseas.
Like was stated above, a lot of times your situation leads to bigger and better things. Keep your head up and shoulders back bud. Opportunities do exist out there and I'm sure you will be OK in your search.suds, suds and more suds! -
Sorry to hear about the RIF. My dad was also RIFed from Steelcase after 29.5 years. I spent 3 of my four summers in college in the plants there. I don't have much good to say about how the plants were run, lots of wasted time and money. They would never drop 60k to fix a machine that probably caused over 60K in damage a year. I never understood...
I would suggest just winning the lotto, then you can just retire. Not sure why more people don't just do that.
