So the other "What do you drive" car thread got me thinking, and I decied I'd post pictures of an engine a friend and I built - which is still sitting in my garage, but will eventually be going into likely a 1971 Chevelle...
THis was our first engine, and was a fun experience. I basically just have pictures of about halfway through and some of the final deal...

So here's the first set. At this point, you can see the short block has already been built (cam, pistons, all that stuff)

Where does the speaker wire go?CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

The toes shown in the pic belong to my wife :-) You can pretty much just picture here standing there, looking at all this 'crap' strewn across the ground, just knowing that I'll never get this built and she'll never be able to park in the garage again...
You can see all the parts laying on the drop cloth behind the engine there...there are a few items not show, but most of the stuff is visible in that pic... -
And the next few pics are of the finished engine...minus stuff like the distributor and carboration of course

Nothing like turnin' over an engine you built yourself.

Can we see more of the toes? The hell with the motor! Besides, it's a Chevy! j/k
Good job! I'll see if I can dig up the shots I did of my Mustang motor from a few years back.
JohnNo excuses! -
I agree with John D.: Lets see more of the lady!
Nice job. I enjoy working on engines. Looks like everything's new there except the block. Vortec heads?

BTW...this a 383 stroker...based on the 350 of course...
-
thats it? I can stroke way faster then that.

That second pic because of the flowers and the table in the background makes the floor kind of looks like carpet and I thought you had the engine stashed in your living room.
I could just picture you sitting in your La-Z-Boy whilst wrenching away! Now thats the way to do it!polkaudio sound quality competitor since 2005

Nice h-beams ya got there...what are you running for pistons? Give us more specs!
-
How come that motor isnt a 4 bolt main ? makes me miss having muscle cars. show us a pic of the car that motor is going in.
-
Four-bolt blocks aren't very common in the used, later model, 1 piece rear main blocks. I like having a four-bolt block too, but the truth is you can make some pretty serious horsepower before the two-bolt caps become a weak link.
Those Vortec heads make pretty nice performance heads with a little bowl work and a spring upgrade. What cam are you using?
Jason -
Nice engine, Polkmaniac. We need more specs, though! What's the compression? What kind of HP and torque are you expecting? I could also ask about the ratios on the cam and such, but I understand all that.....yet.George Grand wrote: »

Took me a while to see the toes ! sounds like some peeps have a foot fetish !
-
I've been out the last week or so, just now getting back online...
Anyway, sounds like there were some questions...
Pistons - Speed Pro Hypereutectic dish pistons
Cam - Comp Cams Xtreme Energy 268/280 Camshaft (not too mild, not too rough)
Compression should be about 9.75/1
HP should be 375-400, torque should be 400-450 ft lbs -
That Cam sounds very nice for a small block chevy
Nice work.

Awesome. I'd personally prefer something more like 450-500 hp and 600 lb-ft of torque, but ya know......that'd be a bit much...:p
Hurry up and get it in a car so you can flog it and see what it does!!George Grand wrote: »
