Both my SDA 2a's and my SDA SRS are particle board. I just looked and my RTi70's are particle board with some MDF parts at the bottom and it looks like the front/rear baffles are MDF. I just replaced the tweeters in my Monitor 10's and they are particle board. The Monitor 7's I just took apart and built new cabinets for are particle board. I have a broken RT25 cabinet in the storage unit that appears to be MDF front and rear baffles and a particle board cabinet. I'm not sure the decision that MDF is better overall is 100% correct. I can buy MDF in bulk a lot cheaper than I can cabinet grade particle board, so if MDF was a lot better, wouldn't most manufacturers go with a cheaper and better material? I'll have to read some of my speaker building books I have bought but haven't got time yet to read and see what they say.

    Anyways...

Do a search on MDF or particle board at -
    http://www.diyaudio.com

You will get alot of bad emotions about Particle board...

Based on that graph, the difference between them is pretty insignificant. It looks like particle board slows sound transmission faster and dampens vibration better. I believe the one advantage MDF has based on the discussions is that it absorbs sound more readily, limiting the reflected sound within the cabinet. It's going to take someone more knowledgeable about speaker engineering than me, but it seems that those sound absorbing properties are why you see MDF used for the front and rear baffles. I say build with MDF and let us know if it makes a difference!

One of two at least, I like working with the stuff too, I've done many speaker projects with both 1/2" and 3/4" MDF.

I dont know if it will make a difference. Isnt the point of the project. I just don't like Particle Board to start with...

Note that, the propegation speed, the higher is the better obviously, as the chart is showing how Aluminum and Birch is better than the rest... The horizontal chart seems to be lower the number the better.

The extra bacing will make a difference if anything...

    So...

Will that Blondewood sufficient for front/rear baffles and internal bracing? (The baffles will be over-layed with oak).

I like MDF, I just don't like the dust from MDF... cutting it is sooo much easier than plywood or hardwood

Trey - The newer series may claim that fact, and you are generalizing, but that's not alltogether new.

Older Polk's are most certainly not 100% MDF, and that would extend into the RT series minimum.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

Yes, I am aware some brands mix and match PB and MDF... Mine mismatch PB and Medite, also known as Medex.

I was not aware Polk mismatched their wood with PB and MDF, my mistake.

It dosnt change the fact which one is better for speakers, even though both are good for the purpose. But MDF dosnt cost much more...

Stay tuned to more generalizing (That I do alot)
