atlas 12

right now i have a Shiva in a 142.5L box. Here's the problem. my wife one fateful day left the volume on my theater at 0DB (very loud). I turned it on, not knowing this, and the system just blasted out and scareed the hell out of me. at first, i thought all the drivers were ok, but now i notice that my shiva farts (not clanking) a little more than usual when pushed hard.

I hear wonderful things about the atlas 12 from ascendant audio, also regarding their adjustable Qts. Anyone have any opinions as to how an Atlas would fly in a 142.5L ported box? what Qts would i use if i did use it.

I allready emailed ascendant audio, but wanted some persepective from you guys as well. thanx for your help.

Call Ascendant and ask for Chad. He can answer just about any question about the drivers. I ordered a 15" from him last week for an IB system. I talked to him for several minutes about different settings and uses.

BTW, what amp are you using for your sub?

I did a quick model in WinISD pro and it should work fine. The Atlas 12 and Shiva seem to model pretty similar.

Check the gasket on the Shiva. Farting is usually not a problem with the driver, but an air leak.

Closed cell foam tape for sealing doors works great.

I'd certainly like to hear your impressions of the Shiva vs. the Atlas 12 if you decide to purchase it. I placed one in an SVS enclosure and it works great.

Graham might be right. checked the driver thouroughly today, voice coil seems fine, no grinding when i push on it. nothing seems out of the ordinary. Played Elektra at moderate volumes with some bass intense scenes with no issues. Maybe i pushed it a little hard a couple of times. will pop out the driver and check the seal.

of course, even if the Shiva is ok, i'm now officially intrigued by the Atlas 12. 145 bucks? XBL motor? 18mm Xmax. seems quite a bit beafier than the Shiva for not much more cheddar.
I was allways happy and surprised by the Shiva's output, if the Atlas is much more, i'm looking at a significant increase in performance.

I'll still call Chad or wait for the email from their tech dept about their stance on using my box. I'm assuming it wont be an issue since tryrrthg says it plots out ok in WinISD.

I had a Shiva for a few weeks before it was blew out. I have had and Atlas in the same enclosure for several months and it works great. It is powered by a Rythmik 350 with the gain turned up only half way and it is quite loud.
