This illusion hasn't been around in while, and I ran acrossed it tonight and thought I would share. This is a great way to win a bet or argument.

Square "A" and Square "B" are actually the same color. You may have to print it out to see the sameness.

    I can see it on both yours and mine.

    It does play tricks on your mind though.

    I just see the word "Kill" and "Gerbil", in perfect greyscale. I think the medication is working....finally.

    I have seen this used to show people that your mind tells you how to deal with contrasts and we can't pick up the differences.

    For people claiming that their projectors produce blacker blacks this illusion shows that you may only think you are seeing black when its only a shade of grey. The black on your TV or projecotr isn't black at all, it can't be when light is included. A TV can't show black, only dark grey.

    I try not to question "why" too much....and roll with what "works".

    You can't tell it until you compare them side by side. They are the same.

    Your mind can't handle the contrast of the surrounding squares to allow you to see it when the spacing is there.

    Print it out and fold it over if you don't trust Trey's dropper.

    Why even bother with that ;)

    I used the color probe in photomagic, on both squares:

    R=107
    G=107
    B=107

    Hmmm, a CRT maybe? I was under the impression that no light was involved with blacks. I can see this when using my HTPC and a movie that isn't 16:9. I can move the mouse cursor to an area that seems to be black (the same colours as the area where projector doesn't project).

    The black of Windows XP screen saver shows as grey when all light in the room is turned out on my CRT. Only when I turn it off do I see the lack of light. I'm no expert on the subject, and not arguing a point on any particular side, I just remembered how I like this excersize of how contrasts can trick our perception of what we see.

    Good contrasts in video reproduction can be had without having absolute blacks and whites, as most of the visible world we live in isn't made up of absolutes.

    Cheers,

    What kind of CRT? My CRT front projector is black on the scenario I described, I will take a closer look on screen saver if it is different. I could see the grey clearly on LCD projectors I have seen with "blank screen".
