Tube Preamps

I hear a lot about tube systems in this forum, and was just wondering if they really make better sound than say a HK or Denon receiver.

I would eventually like to work up to a good sound system where I can hear subtleties like cloth being pulled over a table.

I'm wondering what benefits tube systems have, and whether this is the route I should take.

I do movies and music equally. Music is XM Radio or CD's. Music is usually Jazz, Folk or Easy Listening. Rarely hard rock, but once in a while.

Welcome to the forum! What's your budget?

Yes, they do sound better than a Denon or HK, and I mean A LOT better. Receivers can't even come close.

Subtlities will clearly be heard. Detail is not the only thing that will impress you. Tubes make your music sound real.

From the info you gave us on your music preference, I don't see why you shouldn't give tubes a shot.

Check audiogon and ebay for a used Golden Tube Audio SEP-1. I have one and LOVE it. The company is out of business but you can find their used gear on the net. This pre gives you a very neutral sound with detail, air, soundstaging and transparency being it's biggest strength. Most tube pre amps give you a warmer sound.

Give us a list of your system.

Also, will Tubes have digital input? Or is analog warmer in this case?

I am using Monitor 50's for my fronts, but am eventually going to move to RTi8s.

I have a Velodyne sub, but will eventually go with SVS, or that recommended sub company.

It may be some time before I change over, but I would like to learn as I go, for when I am ready.

Also, will tubes allow 5.1, or are they just for music for the fronts?

    Thanks.

Tubes will only have analog ins. Even with receivers, I find that using the analog ins for 2ch is warmer than digital ins using the receiver's DAC.

Tubes won't allow 5.1 Tube pre amps are 2ch designed for music. Are you using a receiver or do you have a seperate amplifier? If you have a receiver with pre-outs, there's a way to get tubes in the mix for 2ch listening and have 5.1 for movies, but you'll have to use an integrated tube amp for this. We need to know more about your system like the receiver or amp you're using, etc.
